These days, we pay careful attention to make sure we turn off all the lights in the house we don't use, especially with today's rising energy costs. With this conservative mindset, let's ask ourselves: How much electricity does a conventional electric furnace really use in comparison with those lights you make sure to turn off?

Most electric furnaces are 10-20 kW (kilowatts), so let's use 15 kW since it's in between. As for the light bulb, let's use the standard 60-watt light bulb since that's a common item. The 15 kW electric furnace in operation uses 15,000 watts of power. How many 60-watt light bulbs would it take to be equivalent to our furnace? Yes, you guessed it – 250 bulbs!

Is that not crazy? If the power company charged 12 cents per kilowatt-hour, then this furnace would cost $1.80 an hour to operate! That's only $5.45 less than the minimum wage (which is $7.25 an hour), which means if you're making the minimum wage, then your furnace is taking 25% of your earnings when it is operating!

That's a pitiful thought, but it's true. So instead of worrying about the lights, maybe you should worry more about what the thermostat is set on. If this is your situation, maybe you should invest in an alternate heat source. Not propane, either lol"
