When I was an undergraduate back in the day at Queens College, I asked my Honors Chemistry advisor, the eminent organic chemist, A.H. Blatt, if I should buy a copy of last year’s CRC Handbook at a substantial discount or if I should wait until this year’s edition came out. He thought for just a moment then asked: “How often do they change the boiling point of benzene?” He did not need to say more. I bought last year’s edition at a considerable savings. Yes there is a lesson to be learned. The latest is not always the most advantageous or best value.

Another great Italian- American scientist is Nobel Laureate Renato Dulbecco. "Dulbecco [was] credited with playing a pivotal role in the development of modern molecular biology and the discovery of the biochemical basis of our genetic codes. One of his major findings—that tumor viruses cause cancer by inserting their own genes into the chromosomes of infected cells—was among the first clues to the genetic nature of cancer. In 1986, he initiated the idea of studying all human genes, helping to launch the worldwide Human Genome Project."

Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie announced today that he has awarded the President's Medal for Excellence to Italian-American virologist Renato Dulbecco, joint-recipient of the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and one of four Nobel Laureates who worked together at IU in the...

Continuing with October's Italian-American Heritage Month I present Dr. Rita Levi-Montalcini:
"American and Italian-American Win Nobel for Research on Cell Growth
By Cristine Russell, October 14, 1986
An American biochemist and an Italian-American biologist received the 1986 Nobel Prize in medicine yesterday for pioneering research in how cells grow normally and how they may go astray to cause disease.

The Nobel Assembly of Sweden's Karolinska Institute awarded the prize jointly to Stanley Cohen, a 63-year-old professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, and Rita Levi-Montalcini, 77, who worked out of a makeshift lab in her bedroom before and during World War II because anti-Semitism prevented her from working in a university. She has since spent three decades doing research in the United States and is now at the Institute of Cell Biology in Rome.

The Nobel award announcement said that the discoveries of two potent natural substances -- called growth factors -- involved in regulating nerve and skin cells "opened new fields of widespread importance to basic science" and "as a direct consequence" may increase understanding of numerous disorders, including birth defects, cancers, muscular dystrophy, delayed healing of wounds, and Alzheimer's disease."
