It’s early here. Just watching MY Ouranos towing to Flisvos Marina. I wonder if he has an advanced tow protection. Monitoring bilges, battery, pitch, roll. Dynamic geofence with an alarm? And benefitting from being able to tow at night, away from shore and over 50nm fully insured with lower deductibles.
Well I’ll soon find out once I’ve finished my coffee.
I’ve woken up in a maths mood.
Just imagine. With only AIS (which I used to name the yacht). Without all of the above important health stats. (Bilge water ingress can lead to tow break).
If you only check occasionally at the back with eye sight, how far would the tender be if it got loose?
At 12 knots, a yacht travels approximately 370 metres per minute.
If a lost tender goes unnoticed:
• 1 minute = 0.2nm (370m)
• 5 minutes = 1.0nm (1.85km)
• 10 minutes = 2.0nm (3.7km)
• 30 minutes = 6.0nm (11.1km)
• 60 minutes = 12.0nm (22.2km)
The challenge is not simply knowing where a tender was. It’s knowing immediately when something has changed. The further it goes it’s hard to see it also. And knowing before it breaks is part of our job.
This is why insurers increasingly look beyond tracking alone. Early warning of tow separation, movement, bilge activity, battery issues and changing distance from the mothership can allow crew to act before a loss becomes a recovery operation.
And of course in the marina it can be 3 minute updates which isn’t so good if someone has taken it. (That’s if the tender has AIS).
I’m looking forward to this week. I like the vibe here.
