Here's how a 1/2-inch steel plate becomes a precision component for an aerospace project...

This video shows one of our trusted local partners (and dearest friends dating back to the 90's aka ) waterjet cutting the caster mounting plates that went onto the custom seal carts we recently fabricated for .

Waterjet cutting continues to be one of the best manufacturing processes for aerospace and defense applications because it delivers three major advantages:

✓ Precision – Tight tolerances and repeatable accuracy for parts that have to fit the first time.

✓ No Heat-Affected Zone – Since waterjet cutting is a cold-cutting process, the material isn't exposed to the heat distortion that can occur with thermal cutting methods.

✓ Clean, High-Quality Edges – It produces excellent edge quality on thick materials while reducing the amount of secondary finishing required.

At Kelton Manufacturing, we're fortunate to work alongside skilled manufacturing partners like SageCheshire who help us deliver high-quality fabricated assemblies for aerospace and defense programs. From precision-cut components to complete welded assemblies, every step plays a role in the finished product.

If you work in aerospace manufacturing let me know which manufacturing process you think has the biggest impact on part quality before additional fabrication even begins—waterjet, laser cutting, machining, or forming? Let us know why in the comments.

Hey guys and gals. It's been a while since we've posted and wanted to connect on the feeling of efficiency and productivity. They say orderliness is next to Godliness and we couldn't agree more.

One of the things I enjoy most about custom fabrication is seeing an idea become something that's going to be used every single day.

This is one of five custom steel + aluminum tooling carts we recently built for . Built to approximately 10' × 4' × 5', each cart weighs ~2,200 pounds before tooling, and rolls on heavy-duty casters rated for 1,200 pounds each.

Inside, the custom CNC-cut polyethylene foam by out of Escondido, CA was designed to securely organize and protect specialized tooling.

The heavy duty drawer slides we purchased from with an exceptional customer support + sales team. Thanks, Chip!

These are two suppliers who aim to set their customers up to win in advance. And to also mention for their customer support.

Every project has its own challenges, and this one was no exception. It's always rewarding to watch a design come together, have partners whose purpose is bigger than just getting a job done, and know it'll serve its purpose for a greater good for years to come.

Being able to build projects like this here in the Antelope Valley, California, alongside our team at Kelton Manufacturing, is something we don't take for granted.

I'm curious...

What's one piece of shop equipment or tooling that made your work noticeably easier once someone took the time to design it right? Sometimes it's the little details that end up making the biggest difference.

🗓️ 90 years ago, the Hoover Dam was completed — a project many believed couldn’t be done.

Constructed during the Great Depression, the Hoover Dam project created thousands of jobs, while also controlling the Colorado River’s unpredictable floods, and delivering affordable power across the region. The consortium responsible, Six Companies Inc., which included Bechtel, completed the dam two years ahead of schedule and under budget.

At the time, it was the world’s tallest dam and the largest masonry structure ever built:
✅ 4.4 million cubic yards of concrete (equivalent to 5,000 football fields)
✅ 45 million pounds of reinforced steel
✅ 726 feet tall
✅ Still generating electricity for 1.3 million people today

90 years later, the Hoover Dam didn't just transform the American West — it taught us what's possible when perseverance and ingenuity meet a challenge that matters. That same spirit drives how Bechtel approaches today's most complex projects, pairing more than a century of data and process with emerging technologies to solve the infrastructure problems of our time — and the next century.

The Opportunity
Kelton Manufacturing supports custom fabrication projects that often require thoughtful estimating across multiple fabrication processes, materials, and subcontracted operations.
Projects frequently involve combinations of:
• welded assemblies
• sheet metal fabrication
• outsourced machining or forming
• secondary finishing or coating processes
• multi-component fabrication builds requiring supplier coordination
Accurate quoting in these environments requires practical understanding of real fabrication costs, supplier pricing, and manufacturability considerations.
We are particularly interested in estimators who enjoy:
• analyzing fabrication challenges
• identifying cost drivers
• building reliable estimates that support competitive and profitable projects
