GRT competed at the Silicon Valley Regional this past weekend!

We did pretty well against the notoriously tough competition of SVR. Our robot performed well during qualification matches, and we entered the elimination rounds as part of the 4th alliance. After splitting the first two matches of quarterfinals against the 5th alliance, however, we lost the tiebreaker. Although we were knocked out early in elimination, it was incredible seeing our robot successfully perform its functions without major problems. What that meant to all of us was that our hard work in build season had paid off!

GRT also left the competition with two awards. We received the Creativity Award for our unique swerve drivetrain and our impressive controls projects, and we also won the Safety Award for our student-managed safety program! This recognition is incredible coming from such a competitive regional.

Special thanks to everyone who supported us this FRC season: the parents for helping to build our field in the shop, bringing dinner, chaperoning trips, and more; the mentors for opening our shop pretty much 24/7, offering advice, and helping us learn; our GRT alumni for helping to build our field and cheering us on; and our sponsors for shipping our robot, funding us, and providing supplies. We will be back next year!

Our whole team flew out to Houston, Texas this past weekend to compete in the Lone Star Central Regional! With valuable knowledge from Utah and testing at home, our robot performed well, landing us ranked 10th after qualification matches. We became the 8th-seeded alliance captain, choosing the 14th and 22nd seeds for our alliance using our scouting data. Although we were eliminated in quarter finals by the 1st alliance that eventually won the competition, we put up a good fight.

GRT definitely made an impression with our famous cheer and student direction. We also won the Innovation in Control Award with the work of our stellar controls team! We will be at the Silicon Valley Regional in a bit more than a week!

This past weekend, GRT competed in the Utah regional in Salt Lake City. We ironed out a lot of problems with our robot and ended up in 10th at the end of qualification matches. To our surprise, we became the 7th alliance captain on the field! Unfortunately, we were knocked out in quarterfinals, but we left the regional with valuable insight and mechanical fixes. We are ready to implement fixes and improve our robot at home so we are ready to compete at the Lone Star Central Regional next week!

The 2018 build season ended recently. The team put in a lot of time and hard work to get there, and here are some pictures of build to show it!

The animation team submitted a wonderful animation to the contest this year. The animation made it onto the Judges Favorites list! Find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0FX83uKofk

After kickoff on January 6, we had a week of brainstorming and prototyping ideas. We designed a linkage design in CAD and then bandsawed, milled, lathed, and lasercut the pieces of our beta robot. Because we were unsure if the linkage would work, we also designed an elevator mechanism.

When we finished assembling the linkage beta robot, we realized that we did not have sufficient experience with the design to continue to pursue it for our final, omega, robot. Instead, we used the elevator design for the omega robot.

We then machined, wired, assembled, and tested our omega robot.

Finally, we packed the robot and everything we needed for competition into a crate to be shipped off to our first regional in Salt Lake City, Utah. We will be posting in a few days about the regional this past weekend, so keep an eye out!

On November 19, GRT hosted its first FIRST Lego League (FLL) tournament at Gunn. Thanks to our many volunteers, the tournament was a success! We also had the great opportunity to show what GRT does to the many elementary and middle schoolers attending, including our animation and robot from last year!

Today we visited our local elementary school to show kids what we do and to get ideas for our annual haunted house project. It was quite a success--we now have sheets of illustrated ideas that we can turn into mechanisms that will animate our haunted house. In a few weeks, we'll demonstrate the finished house for all the kids in the school!

The revival of GRT media starts now!

The 21st season of GRT has ended on a high note. We attended three regionals: Lubbock, Texas with a small crew; Flagstaff, Arizona with the full team; and of course, SVR in San Jose. At Lubbock, we were picked by the 6th seeded alliance but unfortunately knocked out in quarterfinals.

At Arizona however, we excelled and ended qualification rounds as 1st seed! We picked the 15th (M***a Vista HS) and 47th (from Modesto) seeds, out of 48. While unusual picks for a first-seeded team, our alliance went all the way through elimination rounds and won the regional, sending us to the championships in Houston. We only lost one match the entire regional!

At SVR, we were picked by M***a Vista and their rookie captain in the 7th alliance. We made it to semifinals with this alliance, knocking out the 2nd seed with 971 Spartan Robotics as their captain, a welcome surprise for all of us. This is the first time since 2011 that GRT has made it past quarterfinals at this difficult regional.

In addition to our successes in matches, we won the Excellence in Engineering Award at all three of our regionals for our mostly plastic swerve, a new form of locomotion for our robot where it is able to translate as well as drive like a car.

Finally, at nationals/worlds/championships on the Galileo Field in Houston, Texas, we were picked by the second-seeded alliance in elimination rounds, and made it through quarterfinals into semifinals, the furthest that we have ever gone at championships. Before this year, GRT had never been in eliminations at champs.

It has been an absolutely incredible year for all of us, and we hope to at least near that level of performance in the coming years. Thank you all for your support of our team!
