We recently had a situation that perfectly shows why honest diagnostics and choosing the right HVAC company truly matters.
About 2½ years ago, we installed a new system for a customer. Recently, the homeowner had another company come out for a routine maintenance visit. During that visit, the customer was told their evaporator coil had a refrigerant leak.
Because we were the installing contractor, the customer gave us a call to let us know what they had been told. We explained to them that while anything is possible, we would like the opportunity to inspect the system ourselves before condemning a major component.
Once we arrived, we thoroughly checked the system. Right away, we had very little suspicion the evaporator coil was leaking. Our electronic leak detector was not picking up refrigerant at the coil, and more importantly, the refrigerant charge was still absolutely perfect — maintaining a 9° subcool exactly where the manufacturer calls for nearly 2½ years after installation.
The customer later had a third company come behind us, and they also agreed that the coil had a leak. Even then, we still did not believe the evaporator coil was leaking. However, to help the customer and to give ourselves the opportunity to test the coil firsthand, we agreed to perform the labor at a 50% discount.
After removing and isolating the evaporator coil, we pressure tested it ourselves at over 400 PSI for over 20 minutes.
The result? The evaporator coil NEVER had a leak.
