Trench Safety Stand Down Week continues.

Today’s focus: trench boxes.

When our work takes us below ground, protecting the crew inside the excavation is the priority. Trench boxes are one of the ways we help protect workers from cave-ins and keep the job moving safely.
But like anything in this line of work, they only do their job when they’re used the right way. Proper setup, placement, access, inspections, and understanding the limits of the protective system all matter.

Trench safety isn’t just about checking a box — it’s about making sure the people doing the work are protected while they’re doing it.

In honor of National Trench Safety Stand Down Week, we want to highlight different methods used to keep our crews safe around excavations.

Today we’re talking about benching.

Benching is when the walls of an excavation are cut back in steps instead of being left straight up and down. Those steps help relieve pressure from the trench walls and reduce the risk of a cave-in when the method is used correctly.

This method is not something that is guessed on the fly. Soil type, depth, water, weather, vibration, and nearby equipment all play a role in determining the safest approach. That is why every excavation must be evaluated by a competent person before work begins and as conditions change throughout the day.

It may look like dirt work, but there is a lot of planning behind a safe excavation.

At the end of the day, the goal is simple: get the work done and get everyone home safe.

We were honored yesterday to host Senator Grassley during his 99 county tour across Iowa.

During the visit, we had the opportunity to share more about our businesses, our people, and the work we do to support infrastructure across Iowa. The Q&A also allowed for conversation with members of our team and invited guests on topics including health insurance, infrastructure, and fiber optics. We appreciated the chance to open our doors and highlight our industry.
