We wanted to share a quick project spotlight on the Amtrak East River Tunnel, where Skanska Civil USA needed a safe, efficient way to manage concrete washout inside one of the country’s busiest rail corridors. Traditional methods weren’t an option, so Concrete Washout Systems (CWS) deployed a vacuum-based solution built for tight, sensitive environments—safely removing nearly two miles of concrete slurry without disrupting operations, reducing downtime, improving safety, and minimizing environmental risk while keeping the project on schedule. Concrete Washout Systems (CWS) supported the Amtrak East River Tunnel project by providing a safe, efficient solution for managing concrete slurry in a highly constrained, critical infrastructure environment. Partnering with Abby Roberts, Assistant Superintendent at Skanska Civil USA, the CWS team vacuumed and removed approximately two miles of slurry directly from within the tunnel, ensuring uninterrupted operations while maintaining strict environmental and safety standards. This approach eliminated the risks associated with unmanaged washout in confined spaces, minimized downtime, and helped Skanska maintain compliance on one of the region’s most complex and high-profile transportation projects.
