Tremie Pour Day in Athens County! 🏗️🚧

Today we’re placing concrete into drilled shafts with the help of Tri-State Concrete Pumping and their pump truck.

These shafts have over 11 feet of standing water in each one, so a conventional concrete placement simply isn’t an option. Instead, we’re using the tremie method, where concrete is placed through a pipe all the way to the bottom of the shaft. The concrete rises from the bottom up, displacing the water as it fills the excavation. This prevents the concrete from segregating and helps ensure a high-quality, structurally sound foundation.

It’s always great working with professionals who understand the importance of getting these specialty pours done right. Thanks to Tri-State Concrete Pumping for helping keep the project moving!

What you’re seeing here is one of the most important parts of a drilled shaft foundation: the rock socket.

Our crew is currently working on a roadway slip repair project in Athens County, Ohio, where each drilled shaft must be socketed into competent bedrock to provide the long-term stability needed to support the repaired roadway.

A rock socket is created by drilling beyond the soil and into solid rock. This allows the foundation to transfer loads into the strongest material available, helping resist movement, settlement, and future slope instability.

The quality of the rock socket can be just as important as the shaft itself. Proper depth, clean excavation, and verification of competent rock are critical to ensuring the foundation performs as designed for decades to come.

Whether supporting transportation infrastructure, retaining structures, bridges, transmission lines, or other heavy civil projects, deep foundations are only as good as what they’re bearing on.

Drilled shafts (also known as caissons) are a critical part of modern infrastructure. They’re deep foundation elements designed to transfer heavy loads from structures like bridges, transmission lines, and large buildings down into stable soil or bedrock.

Unlike driven piles, drilled shafts are constructed by drilling a hole, cleaning it out, placing reinforcement, and filling it with concrete—all in place.

Our guys were out in the cold and snow last week in Jeffersonville, OH drilling more substation piers!
