To name a few…

What’s interesting is that none of these things need saving because they’re broken.

They’re being saved because they’re still doing exactly what they were designed to do more than a century later.

Built to last wasn’t a marketing slogan, it was simply how things were made.

These are just a few of the details we’re keeping at 518 Baylen Street and a reminder that sometimes the best thing you can do is preserve what’s already there.

Another Monday, another Preservation Update.

This week brought a few moments we’re especially excited about. The Joyce Turner Award was presented at the North Hill Preservation Association banquet, Nannette was elected to the North Hill Neighborhood Association board, and work continues at the Baylen Street House as internal demo and termite damage removal move forward.

We’re also sharing the first glimpse of something new.

Some historic homes aren’t lost because they can’t be saved. They’re lost because the land beneath them is simply too valuable for developers.

The Legacy Collection is a new preservation initiative by Nannette Chandler, created to save these remarkable homes and offer a rare opportunity for someone to become the property’s next steward.

Our first home is already waiting for its next chapter.

More details on this later this week. 🗝️

It doesn’t always make sense to anybody else.

Honestly, it doesn’t even make sense on paper.

Taking on the house everyone else would tear down. Saving the details no one notices. Choosing the harder, longer, messier path.

But it makes Nannette happy. And over time, we’ve watched that happiness spread to the rest of the community too.

Here’s to the people who can see what something could become and never take the easy way out.

Some places are visited.

Some places are experienced.

The Gilded Lady is for the people who choose history over ordinary and stories over sameness.

Book a stay, host a celebration, make a memory inside a place that has already lived a remarkable life.

The difference between flipping a house and saving one is simple.

A flip covers up the past, preservation uncovers it.

Sometimes that means standing in a cloud of dust with a crowbar, tearing out years of water damage so the house has a chance to stand for another century.

The easy route is to replace everything. The harder route is figuring out what can be saved, honoring the craftsmanship that came before us, and rebuilding only what time has taken away.

Old houses don’t need miracles, they need people willing to do the hard work.

518 Baylen Street restoration is underway.

Progress isn’t always glamorous, but it’s happening.

From making room for century-old live oaks to rebuilding historic structures and waiting on permits, every step is part of preserving Pensacola’s story.

Here’s this week’s Preservation Guild update. 🛠️

Not every preservation project starts with blueprints and building materials. Sometimes it starts with a question.

At the Baylen Street House, an unusual space beneath the staircase sparked a deeper curiosity about Victorian mourning traditions and the way families honored loved ones before funeral homes became common.

Evidence suggests a curtain once hung beneath the stairs, concealing what may have been a coffin alcove during wakes held inside the home.

That discovery sent us down a rabbit hole of research into the customs, rituals, and traditions surrounding death more than a century ago.

Tomorrow we’ll share where that research led us. 👀

PRESERVATION GUILD UPDATE — JUNE 1ST 🛠️

1) We got our first look inside 405 E. Blount Street. Nannette’s official assessment? “It has a sunroof.” We’re pretty sure that wasn’t part of the original design, but every preservation project comes with a few surprises. More details on the vision for this future maker space will continue to be shared on our socials.

2) The 6th and Jackson House project continues to make progress as restoration efforts move forward with plumbing, roof, and electrical work underway.

3) The Bride’s Cottage at The Gilded Lady is getting its roof this week, bringing us one step closer to completing the campus vision.

A lot happening behind the scenes, Pensacola! Keep following along.
