Who writes the code for your home elevator? 👀 It's ASME code week in Warwick, RI. ASME (the American Society of Mechanical Engineers) writes and maintains elevator code.

Big news from the meetings. The Private Residence Elevator committee (PRE 5.3) approved Kevin Heyungs as chair and our own Craig Jones as Vice Chair. Brett Glass and Patrick Speer are there for Cibes Symmetry too, helping guide national elevator code.

We'll share an update after the meetings. Got a question about home elevator code? Drop it in the comments 👇

Can you add an elevator to a house that is already built?

Yes. You can often adapt an existing home for an elevator, even if one wasn’t part of the original plans. It's pretty common, in fact.

The elevator's size and style also matter. For example, some models require a shaft enclosure and a pit under the lowest level. Others, like through-the-floor models, allow one entrance at each level using a single floor opening.

The Ascenda Through the Floor (TFL) Home Elevator from Cibes Symmetry requires no pit or separate machine room. Its smallest model fits in a 40” x 40” area, though you'll need a few more inches for the automatic doors and the hatch.

Adding an elevator still requires a good amount of construction, even with a small lift like an Ascenda or a Cibes Air.

A site assessment determines the structural support, electrical work, and finishing needed, with final dimensions set out in site-specific plans.
