There’s a reason we had the moldings for this nursery shipped in from New Jersey.

We chose Federal-style profiles from Kuiken Brothers for their attention to historically accurate millwork. The shape of a molding matters: crisp edges, defined curves, and deep relief control how it catches light, casts shadows and visually defines openings and borders. With the walls and trim in the same rich color, those shadow lines give the room its depth.

The profiles also need to work together. The scale of the crown, the weight of the door and window casings, and the spacing of the wall panels all contribute to a balanced composition.

That attention extended to the finish. We used a Centurion industrial water based wood coating to give the millwork the smooth surface and refined sheen you’d expect from premium cabinetry.

We knew we wanted a large window here to bring in plenty of natural light and didn’t want to shorten or shrink it just to fit more cabinets. We also wanted a cozy spot for the kids to hang while we cook, or cats to lounge in the sun. This built-in bench was the solution to both.

We ran the bench the full width from one cabinet to the next and finished it with the same wood and stain as the cabinetry. The result feels like a continuation of the surrounding cabinetry, and added function without creating visual clutter with a piece of furniture.

Not every square inch of a kitchen has to be about cooking and storage, sometimes it’s about making room for the people who want to be there with you. 💕

Perhaps the most important category of expertise in a custom kitchen is cabinetry design. Although you could argue on a modern kitchen the detailing becomes simplified, from a craftsmanship perspective everything has to be perfect - there is nowhere to hide. Still, understanding how cabinets need to terminate and coordinate to look “right” is an absolute necessity. Please stay tuned because we have a custom traditional kitchen coming up where we really get to show the depth of our expertise with custom cabinetry design and installation.

A lot of work went into these floors and stairs. The herringbone and border took some figuring out to get everything to land where it needed to, but that’s the kind of work I really enjoy.

Here’s a look at the process, from laying out the floor and fitting the stairs through sanding, filling, and finish. A lot of hours condensed into two minutes.

Really happy with how this one came together.

The client in this kitchen renovation is actually a great local artist with a really cool, eclectic style, and this kitchen ended up feeling very much like her. A mix of textures, warm color, collected pieces and some unexpected details made this one especially fun to bring together. Great client, great space, and we love how it all came together.

It’s one thing to say you have good attention to detail. It’s another to obsess over even the most minute details - both in the design office and on-site.

Not everything existing has to be removed or completely transformed during a remodel.

This home has so much timeless mid-century character, and part of the goal with this kitchen was making the new feel like it belonged with the old.

Sometimes it’s just about figuring out how to bring in all the function of a new space without losing the character that made the home interesting in the first place.
