I feel like quartzite is the new granite, but the slabs have gotten even prettier!

This particular stone is Nera Quartzite with a leathered finish. Quartzite gives you the durability, scratch resistance, heat resistance, and low-maintenance appeal people have always loved about granite, but with more options when it comes to veining and movement that you might find in other natural stones like marble.

The leathered finish gives a softer, more natural and organic feel to the space, and also hides fingerprints and everyday smudges a little better than polished.

Being a natural stone, it does require sealing from time to time, but if you ask me, that’s a fair trade off for all this character.

If you’ve seen photos of our model home kitchen and wondered, “what is happening behind that window?” This is for you.
In this video, Jon breaks down the concrete backsplash panels behind the range, how they were designed specifically for this space to control privacy and sunlight throughout the day and seasons, and how they were built.
A perfect example of Jon’s varied skills all working together to create something truly one of a kind.

A good design can feel simple at first glance.
But usually, the spaces that feel the most natural are the ones where hundreds of tiny decisions have been thought through long before the space is built.
This kitchen may look simple, but every proportion, texture, reveal, material transition, light placement, cabinet function, hardware choice, wall finish, and detail had to be considered.
None of these decisions have a huge impact on their own. But when they are skipped, rushed, or made in isolation, that is usually when a space starts to feel a little off.
This is where design makes a real difference. Not because every project needs to be overcomplicated, but because having someone guide those decisions leaves less up to chance.

One of the most overlooked aspects of standard tile installs is tile layout. Taking the time to map out where every tile will land ensures that the grout lines not only complement the other lines in the space but that we don’t end up with weird slivers and awkward pieces where we don’t want them. It’s hard to overstate how leveraging modeling software to visualize the resulting layout before we start can make the final result feel premium. We can also show our clients exactly where our grout lines will land ahead of time so they can have a say in what will look the best.

We worked through a number of layout iterations for this bathroom using the existing footprint, but none were quite making the improvements needed. While the clients hadn’t explicitly stated that expanding into the adjacent closet was a possibility, they had mentioned how much they disliked the narrow, dysfunctional space. So we decided to take a chance and expand and change the footprint. When we presented the more extensive layout change during a design meeting, we knew, almost immediately, this was the right solution. While answering the main design requests of an improved bathroom layout and large walk-in shower, we were also able to fix the closet pain point, something they didn’t expect they would get during this remodel. This project is a prime example of how foregoing design can leave great solutions undiscovered.

We are always looking for materials and installation methods that perform better for their intended purpose. These envelope shower pans we have been doing are a perfect example of leveraging modern products and installation methods to create a shower that will reduce the clients time spent not only cleaning and maintaining their tile shower floor but also their need to worry about costly plumbing blockages caused by hair build - especially in older homes with older drain pipes. If properly cared for this shower should last a lifetime.

This coffee nook was built to actually fit the space.

We scribed both sides tight to the brick, built a flush baseboard, and spent a lot of time dialing in the reveals so everything lines up the way it should.

In the end it looks simple, but getting there took a lot of care and attention.

It may not look like much but this minimalist concrete coffee table weighs in at over 350 lbs. The way that it sits with just a 1/2” reveal at the floor makes it extremely difficult to get hands under to move it at all. Nevermind, the fact that it takes 2 or 3 people to even lift it. We had to engineer a solution to be able to easily move this table around or it would just become a huge annoying boulder in the middle of the living space. We used a Crain appliance air lift with a flush mount 22 system outlet to allow this thing to be moved with almost no effort. We used Kodiak Pro Makers Mix concrete (the best) and mixed it cold which gave us the nice concrete pin hole look on the sides while maintaining a perfectly pinhole free face. We used an assortment of fibers and let them ghost into the face coat to give a sort of stone mineral appearance that really gave the surface appearance natural organic look.

This bathroom experienced a remarkable transformation. Where the shower sits was actually a walk-in closet accessed through an adjacent bedroom. We moved the closet to the left side wall, moved the vanity from the left side to the right side and completely changed the function and aesthetic quality for the clients. This was one of the more complex and skill intensive bathrooms we've tackled - especially considering the relatively small footprint. In the end, everything came out near perfect. Thankfully, after over a decade of continuous improvement, we can say we have our bathroom remodels truly dialed in.
