View of the collision between the U.S. Navy submarine USS Stickleback (SS-415) and the destroyer es**rt USS Silverstein (DE-534) off Oahu, Hawaii (USA), on 29 May 1958. Stickleback had completed a simulated torpedo run on Silverstein during an exercise. As Stickleback was going to a safe depth, she lost power and broached approximately 180 m ahead of the destroyer es**rt. Silverstein backed full and put her rudder hard left in an effort to avoid a collision but holed the submarine on her port side. Stickleback later sank.USN Image /Nhhc

The "muleteer" plaster cast of Pompeii, currently on display in the Macellum near the Forum (15 July 2025). The name "muleteer" comes from the fact that the victim was found near a mule. He was found in the Palaestra.

When you look at this cast, it appears as though the victim was sitting down covering his face, perhaps crying in his final moments of agony, almost as though he has given up. But when the cast was made, it was found to be facedown¹, and so the current position is somewhat misleading.

This man was in fact on his knees holding what appears to be his cloak over his face. He was probably trying to protect himself against the asphyxiating gases and the heat from the pyroclastic current.
