September is National Preparedness Month, and preparedness starts before an emergency ever happens. ๐Ÿšจ

The first step? Detecting the emergency.

Fire alarm and detection systems help identify signs of danger and initiate the response that follows, from alerting building occupants to supporting evacuation and emergency response.

But detection equipment can only do its job when the systems behind it are thoughtfully designed, properly installed, regularly tested, and maintained.

Throughout September, weโ€™ll be looking at different pieces of emergency preparedness and how life-safety systems work together when every second matters.

๐Ÿ”Ž Part 1: Detect the Emergency
Next up: Communicate the Emergency.

Because effective preparedness connects every step:
Detect. Communicate. Respond.

When first responders enter a building, reliable radio communication should not stop at the front door. ๐Ÿ“ก๐Ÿš’

Modern construction materials, concrete, steel, low-E glass, underground areas, and complex building layouts can create areas where public-safety radio signals become weak or unavailable.

A recent *Security Management* article highlights the role of in-building public-safety communication systems in helping eliminate those coverage gaps, including in critical areas such as stairwells, basements, elevators, and mechanical rooms.

Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement Systems, or ERCES, help extend public-safety radio coverage throughout a building so firefighters, police, and EMS can stay connected when responding inside the structure.

For building owners and facility teams, reliable responder communication is an important part of the overall life-safety picture.

While low-e glass, energy-efficient materials, concrete, and steel improve building performance, they can interfere with public safety radio signals.

Safer buildings start long before installation begins. ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”ฅ

Thoughtful life-safety design brings system requirements, device placement, code considerations, and project coordination together before work ever reaches the field.
That early planning can help:

โœ… Reduce confusion during installation
โœ… Support a smoother approval process
โœ… Improve coordination between trades
โœ… Give installers a clearer path forward
โœ… Help identify potential issues before they become costly delays

From the first drawing to final installation, every design decision plays a role in how effectively a life-safety system can serve the people inside the building.

At JMEE, we approach design with one goal in mind: creating well-planned systems that support safer, more prepared buildings from the start. ๐Ÿข๐Ÿšจ

๐Ÿšจ NFPA 25 is evolving. And it could impact your facility's inspection schedules, deficiency timelines, and compliance reporting.

The 2026 edition of NFPA 25 introduces several notable updates for water-based fire-protection systems, including:

๐Ÿ”น Clearer fire-department notification requirements when a system is impaired
๐Ÿ”น Recommended timelines for correcting critical and noncritical deficiencies
๐Ÿ”น Updated sprinkler-cabinet and spare-wrench requirements
๐Ÿ”น More frequent inspections for certain valves and system components
๐Ÿ”น Additional guidance for identifying inactive or abandoned systems

For building owners and facility managers, the takeaway is simple: compliance procedures must evolve along with the codes.

Because local adoption and AHJ enforcement vary, now is the time to review your current maintenance plan.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Not sure how the new NFPA 25 updates affect your building? The JMEE team can review your system records and keep your facility fully compliant. ๐Ÿ“ง [email protected] | โ˜Ž๏ธ (512) 244-1212

Texas school-safety requirements continue to evolve.

The Texas Education Agency has proposed updates for the 2026โ€“2027 school year that would clarify requirements related to facility security reviews, emergency-response coordination, access points, door identification, and ongoing compliance.

One proposed update would require security reviews for newly constructed, acquired, or substantially renovated facilities before students occupy the building. Schools would also be required to provide electronic door-numbering site plans to applicable emergency service districts.

As campuses prepare for a new school year, staying informed is an important part of maintaining safe, compliant facilities.

Texas schools are starting the new school year with mandatory heat-safety standards for UIL activities. ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿฅ

Effective August 1, 2026, member schools must monitor conditions using Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) and adjust outdoor activities based on measured heat risk.

Depending on conditions, that may mean extra water breaks, equipment changes, shorter practices, or suspended outdoor activity.

Prevention is the first line of defense, but schools also need a fast, reliable plan for medical emergencies on the field.

BluePoint Medical provides a familiar, easy-to-activate alert for situations requiring urgent medical assistance. When activated, it notifies designated personnel and responders while communicating the exact location of the incident, helping help reach the right place quickly when seconds count.

As Texas students return to fall practices and marching band, preparation should cover both heat-illness prevention and rapid emergency response.

๐Ÿ”” When a fire alarm activates at a school, several systems and procedures begin working together.

The alarm alerts students and staff, evacuation procedures begin, emergency personnel are notified, and responders assess the situation before anyone is allowed back inside.

Each campus may follow a slightly different emergency plan, but the goal remains the same: communicate clearly, move occupants to safety, and support a fast, coordinated response.

Reliable detection, notification, monitoring, and emergency communication systems help make every step possible. ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿš’

๐Ÿšจ When fire-code deadlines hit, unresolved upgrades can stop operations overnight.

Required life-safety upgrades can affect more than an inspection. They can determine whether a building is permitted to remain occupied.

The Bonham Exchange temporarily closed after the City of San Antonio denied an additional extension for required fire-sprinkler upgrades. According to the city, the venue may reopen after the systems are installed, pass inspection, and permanent Certificates of Occupancy are issued.

This is a critical reminder for property owners and facility managers: unresolved fire-code requirements will eventually catch up to daily operations.

Addressing required fire sprinkler and life-safety upgrades early gives your team time for design, permitting, installation, and AHJ testingโ€”before compliance turns into an operational emergency.

โœ๏ธ Before students return, school buildings quickly shift from quiet summer schedules to full classrooms, busy hallways, after-school activities, and increased system demand.

That makes the weeks before the first day of school an important time to review the life-safety systems that support students, staff, and first responders. ๐Ÿซ

From fire alarms and emergency communication to clear exits, backup power, and staff procedures, a proactive check can help identify issues before buildings return to full occupancy.๐Ÿงฏ

Fire Protection Is an Investment in Continuity ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ“ˆ

๏ฟฝWhen critical operations like data centers go down due to fire events, the financial impact can be enormous โ€” from lost productivity and data loss to costly service outages and recovery time ๐Ÿ•’๐Ÿ’ธ.

Thatโ€™s why investing in advanced fire detection and suppression systems is not just protecting assets โ€” itโ€™s protecting business continuity and operational uptime.

According to a 2025 industry report, the global market for data center fire detection and suppression is projected to reach $1.8 billion by 2030, driven by demand for early smoke detection, rapid response, and minimal service interruption ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ“Š. Early detection technologies like aspirating smoke detection systems are becoming essential in environments where downtime impacts revenue and service delivery.

At JM Electronic Engineering, we help design and implement fire detection systems that catch threats before they escalate โ€” helping reduce downtime and keep your operations running ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ.
