On Saturday, Hanwha Philly Shipyard (HPSI) proudly celebrated the christening of Makua, the first of three new Aloha Class containerships being built for Matson, marking an exciting milestone for both companies and the dedicated teams bringing the vessel to life.

The ceremony brought together leaders from HPSI and Matson, including HPSI CEO David Kim, Matson Chairman and CEO Matt Cox, U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) Deputy Commander Lt. General Jered P. Helwig, and other distinguished guests.

Following remarks from the ceremony speakers, Jenai S. Wall, Makua’s sponsor, officially christened the ship with the traditional bottle-breaking ceremony.

Makua’s christening celebrates more than two decades of successful collaboration between HPSI and Matson, as well as the continued strength of their shipbuilding partnership.

A proud day for American shipbuilding!

Hanwha Philly Shipyard has been contracted to build the Missile Defense Agency’s new Missile Range Instrumentation Vessels (MRIV), with TOTE Services serving as vessel construction manager.

The new 525-foot vessels will support critical U.S. missile range instrumentation missions and replace two vessels that have served the nation for more than five decades.

The MRIV design builds on the proven National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) platform already in production at our shipyard, with substantial commonality. That means we can leverage an active production line, established supply chain, and, most importantly, the skilled workforce already building ships here in Philadelphia.

This program represents another important step in the evolution of Hanwha Philly Shipyard and our growing role in strengthening America’s maritime industrial base and supporting our nation’s security.

We’re proud to build what’s next, right here in Philadelphia.

Hanwha Philly Shipyard (HPSI) was pleased to welcome Vice Admiral Robert M. Gaucher and Rear Admiral Jonathan Rucker for a visit and discussion on the future of U.S. shipbuilding.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss ways to strengthen the U.S. shipbuilding industrial base through advanced manufacturing, automation, workforce development, and collaboration across government and industry.

HPSI remains committed to investing in American workers, expanding domestic shipbuilding capabilities, and leveraging Hanwha's global shipbuilding expertise and advanced technologies to support the long-term growth of the U.S. maritime industry.

This National Manufacturing Day, we’re celebrating the progress we’ve made at Hanwha Philly Shipyard (HPSI) over the past year and the people who made it possible.

From the recent deliveries of our NSMV and SRIV vessels to the Aloha Class containerships we’re currently building, our team continues to make progress while laying the groundwork for future growth. With new commercial and government shipbuilding opportunities on the horizon, our team is focused on building the workforce and capabilities needed to support HPSI’s continued growth.

As we look to the future, we’re proud of our workforce and the role our Shipyard plays in strengthening American shipbuilding.

At Hanwha Philly Shipyard (HPSI), employees came together to recognize Chuseok, a Korean holiday centered on gratitude, family, and celebrating the harvest.

Throughout the Shipyard, team members enjoyed songpyeon, traditional half-moon-shaped rice cakes, and took part in a friendly jegichagi tournament, a traditional Korean game where players kick a jegi into the air and try to keep it from touching the ground.

Congratulations to YouHoon Jeon, Assistant Manager, Construction Engineering on team 330, on winning the jegichagi tournament with 33 kicks!

These traditions reflect the spirit of a holiday that has long brought families together through food, stories, games, and time spent honoring the generations that came before them. Traditionally celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, Chuseok remains an important opportunity to celebrate those connections.

Our celebration offered employees a chance to learn more about an important part of Korean culture while enjoying time together as a Shipyard community.

On World Maritime Day, we celebrate the people and industries that keep the world connected through the sea. From global commerce and transportation to shipbuilding and operations, the maritime industry plays a vital role in everyday life.

At Hanwha Philly Shipyard (HPSI), we’re proud to be part of this global maritime network. The vessels built in Philadelphia contribute to America’s maritime future and highlight the important role shipbuilding plays in supporting our nation’s capabilities and the broader maritime industry.
