Every December someone staples a string of lights to the edge of their roof.

Each staple is a hole through the shingle, and each one is a place for water to get in long after the lights come down. Clips designed for shingles and gutters hold lights just as well without touching the roof itself.

We hang lights like roofers, because we are. (215) 678-7762

If water drips off the very end of a gutter run, the gutter is probably fine.

The end cap is sealed into place, and after enough summers that sealant cracks and lets go. Water then runs out the seam and down the fascia, which is where the real damage starts.

Resealing end caps is ten minutes of work. Leaving them is how fascia rots. (215) 678-7762

Many older homes here still have galvanized steel gutters.

They are tough, but once the zinc coating wears through, they rust from the inside where water and leaves sit. It starts as tiny pinholes you cannot see from the ground and drips you blame on clogs.

Aluminum does not rust. If yours are steel and dripping mid-run, that is likely why. (215) 678-7762

Look for any downspout that ends on a lower section of roof instead of in a gutter.

It concentrates the whole upper roof's water onto a narrow path of shingles, storm after storm. That strip loses granules years before the rest of the roof, and it is usually the first place a lower roof leaks.

Extending it to the lower gutter is a small job that saves that section of roof. (215) 678-7762

A lot of older homes here send downspouts into a pipe that disappears underground.

When that line clogs with leaves or gets crushed by roots, the water has nowhere to go. It backs up the downspout, spills at the base, and soaks the ground right against your foundation. From the street everything looks connected.

If water bubbles up or overflows at the bottom of a downspout in a storm, that pipe needs a look. (215) 678-7762

Those dark vertical streaks on the front of a gutter are not dirt from the air.

They form where water spills over the front lip, over and over, leaving residue behind. That means the gutter is overflowing at that spot, from a clog, the wrong pitch, or more water than it can carry.

The streaks wash off. The overflow is the part worth fixing. (215) 678-7762

Most houses here have five-inch gutters because that is what most houses get.

A large roof, a steep pitch, or a long run to one downspout can send more water than a five-inch gutter can carry in a real storm. The gutter is not clogged and not broken. It is just undersized, and it overflows every time.

If yours overflow when they are clean, size may be the reason. We can tell you. (215) 678-7762

If water pours over your gutter at one spot in a heavy rain, look up. There is probably a valley above it.

A valley collects water from two roof planes and sends all of it to one corner of the gutter at speed. A clean gutter can still overshoot there. A small splash guard at that corner turns the water down into the gutter instead of over it.

It is a cheap fix for a spot that soaks your foundation every storm. (215) 678-7762

Seamless gutters are one piece along each side of the house. The corners are not.

Every inside and outside corner is a mitered joint held together with sealant and fasteners. Sun and freeze cycles dry that sealant out, and the drip you see at the corner of the house is usually a corner seam letting go.

Resealing a corner is a small job. Catching it early keeps it small. (215) 678-7762

If your gutters still hold water a day after it rains, they are not clogged. They are flat.

A gutter needs about a quarter inch of fall every ten feet to move water to the downspout. Houses settle and hangers loosen, and a gutter that sags in the middle turns into a trough. Standing water adds weight, and in winter it adds ice.

We check the pitch on every gutter job. (215) 678-7762
