☀️ Reflecting on Summer 2026 at DNI!

This summer brought new students and researchers, exciting projects in the lab, conferences around the world, and many opportunities to celebrate the achievements of our DNI community.

From welcoming interns, co-op students, and new PhD students to presenting the latest MXene research, receiving awards and honors, publishing new work, and celebrating the successes of our alumni, it has been a busy and rewarding summer.

We’re grateful to everyone who made Summer 2026 memorable and are excited to carry this energy into the new academic year! 🔬✨

Congratulations to Professor Yury Gogotsi on another outstanding global recognition!

Professor Yury Gogotsi has been ranked #2 in the world in Materials Science and #1 in the USA for lifetime citation impact in the latest Top 1000 Scholars ranking.

This recognition reflects the extraordinary impact of Professor Gogotsi’s research and the work of the many researchers who have contributed to his research program over the years.

Gogotsi’s scientific journey is closely connected with several leading researchers in the field, including Professor Michel W. Barsoum, whose pioneering work on MAX phases laid important foundations for the development of MXenes; Dr. Michael Naguib, a former Drexel Ph.D. student and first author of the landmark 2011 paper reporting the first MXenes; and Professor Patrice Simon, a leading researcher in electrochemical energy storage and a longtime collaborator of Gogotsi.

Together with colleagues around the world, their research has helped establish MXenes as a major family of 2D materials with applications ranging from energy storage and electronics to biomedical technologies and communications.

We are proud to celebrate Professor Gogotsi and the many students, researchers, collaborators, and alumni whose contributions have helped advance this field and expand the global impact of research at the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute. 🔬

We’re excited to share that Yury Gogotsi, Ph.D., D.Sc., Dr.h.c., Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Drexel University, has been announced as the speaker for the 2026 Shipley Distinguished Lecture.

The Shipley Distinguished Lecture Series has welcomed 26 leading scientists and engineers, including 11 Nobel Prize laureates, since its establishment. We are honored to see Professor Gogotsi join this distinguished group and represent Drexel’s continued impact on materials science and engineering.

🎓 PhD Opportunity in Computational Seawater Splitting

A fully funded 3-year PhD position is available at the Institut de Chimie Physique, Université Paris-Saclay, France, focused on computational screening of MXenes for hydrogen generation from seawater.

The project, “High Throughput Screening of MXenes for Seawater Splitting,” will combine Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations using VASP and machine learning to investigate promising MXene materials for hydrogen production. Research will explore seawater ion competition, adsorption sites, charge redistribution, and their effects on hydrogen adsorption.

🔬 Preferred experience: DFT calculations
💻 Valuable skills: Strong Python programming
🌍 Position: Fully funded, 3 years

🎉 Congratulations to our newest GAANN Fellow, Evelyn Carpenter evelyn 🫐🧸!

We are excited to welcome Evelyn, our new PhD student, as a GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) Fellow, beginning October 1.

The U.S. Department of Education’s GAANN program supports outstanding graduate students pursuing PhDs in fields of national need. This fellowship is a wonderful recognition of Evelyn’s academic achievements and potential.

Congratulations, Evelyn! We also thank Prof. Jörn Venderbos and Prof. Steve May for their leadership of the program. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with Prof. May’s group through this appointment.

We’re excited to share that the A.J. Drexel Nanomaterials Institute will be strongly represented at the 4th International MXene Conference, taking place August 20–22 at the University of Chicago!

Our team will present cutting-edge research across MXene synthesis, characterization, energy and electrocatalysis, water & desalination, health applications, and more - through plenary and invited talks, flash talks, and poster presentations.

A special highlight: Yury Gogotsi, Professor and Director of DNI, will deliver the Concluding Address at the closing plenary session on August 22!

Congratulations to Prof. Yury Gogotsi on being elected a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science (WAAS)!

Founded in 1960, WAAS is one of the world’s most selective interdisciplinary academies, bringing together distinguished leaders in science, education, public policy, business, and the arts. Its fellowship includes Nobel laureates, heads of state, and other globally recognized innovators.

Prof. Gogotsi’s election recognizes his outstanding contributions to science and engineering, as well as his commitment to advancing technology for the benefit of society. The Electrochemical Society (ECS) has featured Prof. Yury Gogotsi as part of the lead-up to the 250th ECS Meeting in Calgary! 🎉

In this short video, Prof. Gogotsi reflects on the value of ECS meetings, highlighting how networking, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas have shaped his career and advanced the field of electrochemistry and materials science.
