These radiographs were made using fewer X-rays than traditional scans. Scientists publishing in ACS Central Science increased the sensitivity of the detector using specially engineered crystals. This new technology reduced the dosage of X-rays that are needed to produce a high-quality image. These images show how well the new detector reveals a metal needle piercing a raspberry or the internal guts of a USB cord.

“This advancement reduces detection limits and paves the way for safer and more energy-efficient medical imaging and industrial monitoring,” says Omar F. Mohammed, the corresponding author on the study.

You’ll have the opportunity to see historical lantern slides from The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, American Philosophical Society, Founder's Hall at Girard College, Haverford College Quaker and Special Collections, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society at Wagner Free Institute of Science.

In the spirit of lantern exhibition culture, this salon will bring together unique and rarely seen images presented in the context for which they were originally created.

Sit back and enjoy as we travel over and around the Swiss Alps; explore Palestine through the eyes of Khalil Raad, “Palestine’s first Arab photographer”; view hand-colored images of Philadelphia gardens while learning about the pioneering women who created them; survey early twentieth century insects of the Western United States; and so much more!

Predating the motion picture, lantern slides were used for entertainment and to illustrate educational programs. The Philadelphia Lantern Slide Salon will be held using a historic lantern projector in the Wagner’s Victorian-era lecture hall.

It will be a rare treat while reviving an old technology to see a culturally significant lantern slides from the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel, and other Philadelphia’s most distinguished institutions.
