One of the most common errors people make leading to injuries on a ladder is choosing the wrong ladder for the job they need to complete.

Per OSHA, over 164,000 injuries occur per year on job sites due to a worker choosing the incorrect ladder for the situation they are in. The most common citations arise from situations like using the top step of the ladder or ladders not being used as intended.

Choosing the correct type ladder will always come down to the environment you are in. If you are near electricity you should always be using a fiberglass ladder since aluminum conducts electricity. The entire weight that will be on the ladders needs to be taken into account as well. This doesn't only include the worker but what the worker is carrying & wearing. ANSI have 5 different weight rating.
- Type III (200 lbs rated)
- Type II (225 lbs rated)
- Type I (250 lbs rated)
- Type IA (300 lbs rated)
- Type IAA (375 lbs rated)

The last aspect to take into account when you are choosing your ladder is the height that is needed to be reached. Per Werner Ladder, "the maximum safe reaching height is approximately 4' higher than the height of your ladder". For example, if the worker needs to reach 12' than the ladder height should be 8'.

Are you anchoring your fall protection properly?

The most common mistakes when it comes to fall protection is insufficient anchorage strength & the wrong connection. There are three different types of connectors:
- Type A: designed for active fall protection
- Type T: designed for suspended fall protection
- Type D: designed to allow deformation or movement when arresting a fall

The most important aspect for users to understand is what each anchorage connector is designed for so they are using them correctly. Typically, the connector itself must have a strength of 5,000 lbs.

Different manufactures design their connectors to manage the energy of the fall so that is why it is import to ensure you have a qualified and competent person on site to confirm the anchor has the minimum strength that is required.
