Analyzes variety of specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate or repair cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, or machinists’ handtools, applying knowledge of tool design shop mathematics, metal properties, and layout, machining, and assembly procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Sets up Bihler machines to produce parts to specifications. Studies blueprints to determine machining to be done and plans layout and assembly by applying knowledge of materials, matching, assembly methods and mathematics. Works with designers to improve process and correct problems.
2. Develops specifications from general descriptions and draws or sketches tool to be fabricated, using drafting equipment or computer software programs.
3. Develops tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges or hand tools by setting up and operating lathe, mill, shaper, grinder, drill press, and related equipment. Smooth and scrape parts to fit, using hand tools such as files and scrapers.
4. Confirms that tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges or hand tools meet specifications by using micrometers, thickness gauges, gauge blocks, and other measurement tools to ensure that produced parts meet specifications. Adjust tooling to bring parts into tolerance. When adjustments are not effective, measures tooling, isolates the problem, and modifies the existing tooling by grinding, milling, drilling, EDM or make tooling pieces from scratch. Utilizes the oven or torch to strengthen tools, jigs, fixtures gauges or hand tools by heat treating materials.
5. Resolves assembly problems by altering process to meet specifications.
