When visiting my Grandpa for Memorial day, one of his neighbors was throwing out this gorgeous 300-gallon classic aquarium. It was too large for me to take home with me, so I offered to turn it into something nice for whoever could manage to make space for it locally. My Grandpa quickly took a sawzall to some bushes on his front porch, made the space for it, and I got to work!

I had to make do with whatever plants and supplies I could pull together on a two-day vacation, away from home, but it turned out pretty awesome and I'm excited to see how much it's filled in the next time I visit!

Since the aquarium itself was free, the whole thing cost me about $300 to build, with $225 of that being substrate materials from home depot. Plants were the remaining $75. The driftwood and rocks I pulled from a nearby creek, and the other decorations my Grandpa already had in this planter before.

Is there such a thing as 'too simple' when it comes to terrariums? This 4x4x2" terrarium includes only UNS controsoil, a few rocks, and anubias nana petite.

I've never kept a scape this simple before. I love the way it looks but I'm really not sure how it may look a few months from now. Do you see any potential issues with this scape?

I like to sit in front of this terrarium and pretend I'm a tiny person inside, exploring the jungle.

This is the largest terrarium I have, and also the most difficult to get pictures of. It's located in a narrow hallway and I can't get back far enough to get pictures of the entire thing. So until I get a wide-angle lens, you guys get little pieces at a time πŸ™ƒ

I'm always looking for better ways to utilize my space, and for ways to get more moss! This solution accomplishes both of those perfectly. I love watching the moss fill in and I can't wait to yank it all out to use in other terrariums 😁

Only three more IKEA akerbar terrariums and these shelves will be all filled up!
