Our cabin is clad in Spruce board & batten. It’s readily available in our area, it’s economical and has really interesting grain that reminds me of flowing water.
Board and batten has become wildly popular these days, particularly in the modern farmhouse design realm. Most B&B in todays built environment has been heavily manufactured, and for good reason. But for our little rustic cabin, we milled the trees and immediately put it on the cabin. It was green and still full of moisture. As the wood dries, big gaps appear between the boards so battens are installed over these seams and allow the wood to dry on the building and end with a finished look. It’s a very efficient way to build.
This weekend we wandered through a magnificent Spruce stand and now I like it even more.
