We are sorry to report the loss of our brother Red Oak Firefighter Jay Lyons today in a tragic accident while he was on vacation outside of the country. Jay was well liked here at Red Oak and he made a lasting impression on everyone. He was one of our crew who deployed to Western North Carolina to assist Little River Vol. Fire Dept. in Transylvania County following Hurricane Helene. He was an optimistic person who loved his family. He served at several fire departments in the area, including Leggett Volunteer Fire Department and Edgecombe County, NC Emergency Services. Please keep his family, friends, and fire department colleagues in your thoughts and prayers as we move though this difficult time.

Today Transylvania County Chairman Jason Chappell declared a State of Emergency due to movement north of the Table Rock and Cliff Ridge Fires. County emergency response agencies are working with local, regional and state partners to take proactive action should the fires progress across the state line. Residents living adjacent to the South Carolina line and the 276 area should be prepared to evacuate as conditions can change rapidly. All residents are encouraged to clear leaves and any other dry vegetative debris away from their homes, gutters and vehicles and to maintain situational awareness. No North Carolina evacuations have been ordered at this time, but crews are planning to make contact with residences closest to the fires and evacuations may become necessary. We continue to monitor the situation and will issue more information as needed. https://www.transylvaniacounty.org/news/notice-public-declaration-local-state-emergency-transylvania-county

Transylvania County Fire Marshal's Office has put in place effective immediately a burn ban for any open burning within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling in the interest of public safety due to the hazardous forest fire conditions. What this does not apply to is cooking fires such as grills, BBQ's, and outdoor cookers. This local ban will remain in effect until further notice. The press release from the Transylvania County Fire Marshal's Office is attached.

03/21/2025

Due to increased fire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 8 a.m. Friday, March 21 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within that 100 feet.
