🚫 HVAC Heat Pump Tip: Don’t cover or stack things on your outdoor unit 🚫

We know folks often do it to protect the unit from winter weather —and it makes sense why people would think this is safe.

BUT... outdoor HVAC units are built to handle rain, snow, and cold. When items are placed on top or the unit is fully covered, it can actually do more harm than good.

Covering or stacking things can:
• Block proper airflow
• Trap moisture inside the unit
• Lead to unnecessary wear and damage

If you’re trying to protect your unit, there are safer options that won’t affect performance in the long run. When in doubt, turn the outdoor unit OFF by placing your heat pump into emergency heat on your thermostat settings! This will turn on the heat strips in your indoor unit. It works like a giant hair dryer by moving air over electric coils inside your indoor unit and blowing that warmed air through your duct work instead of using the outdoor unit.

When ice starts building up on your heat pump it’s time to turn it OFF. Running a heat pump while it’s iced over can damage the system and leave you without heat when you need it most.

👉 Switch to Emergency Heat instead until conditions improve.

A few more winter tips to stay warm & protect your system:
• ❄️ Keep snow and ice cleared from around the outdoor unit
• 🌡️ Avoid constantly adjusting the thermostat—set it and leave it
• 🧊 Never chip ice off the unit (it can bend coils and fins)
• 🧣 Seal drafts around doors and windows to help your system keep up
