Build vs. Buy

One of the biggest advantages I’ve found using AI as an entrepreneur is simple: customization.

I’m not locked into someone else’s idea of how my business should run. I can build tools that fit exactly how I work.

And once you realize that… a bigger question comes up:

Why stop at building for yourself?

If a tool solves a real problem for you, there’s a good chance it can help others in your industry too. That opens the door to turning your internal solutions into product offerings or even white-label services.

So why rely only on boxed software?

Pre-built platforms often come with rigid workflows, long-term contracts, and rising costs. They work… but they rarely fit perfectly.

Building your own vision vs buying someone else's.

With all the technology available today, why would you buy a solution that someone else saw that fit their needs?

Remember when companies built their own software because nothing on the market fit their business?

I think we are heading back to that world.

AI is changing the economics of software development. In big companies I have seen the same pattern again and again. The ERP covers most of what the business needs, then the company buys extra tools to fill the gaps. Each tool adds cost, complexity, and another system that never quite fits.

Here is the shift I see coming. As AI speeds up how fast software can be designed, built, and integrated, buying off-the-shelf tools will make less sense. Many of those tools are oversized, over featured, and overpriced.

AI gives businesses the ability to build exactly what they need. No bloat. No paying for features they never use. And with AI-assisted integrations, even older systems can finally talk to each other.

Custom software is becoming practical again. AI is the reason. So what will you do? Shop or build?
