The SAE Aero Design team at UW-Platteville is thrilled to share that the team earned 2nd place at the SAE Aero Design East competition in Lakeland, FL. The team also earned 2nd place superlative awards for both the Flight Demonstration Readiness Review (FDRR) presentation and Mission Score. The FDRR evaluates preparedness, risk assessment and risk management prior to competition. The Mission Score reflects the average of our top three flights, each requiring an increased payload after every successful round. We also placed 9th in the Design Report category. These scores represent the best the team has done in over 20 years.
Throughout the weekend, the team was able to not only compete at the highest level but also give back to the other competitors and the volunteering staff. We assisted with competition setup of the fencing for the flight line, completed daily FOD walks prior to each flight day to ensure the safety of all competition aircraft, and helped raise and lower competing countries’ flags. In addition to this, the team was able to assist fellow competitors with aircraft issues and help to solve them. Giving back to those who make this event possible is a core part of the Pioneer Flyers’ identity.
As we reflect on the growth of the team over the past couple of years, it is clear that we are only gaining momentum. From not having scored a competition flight round 2 years ago, then taking off and scoring for the first time in 10 years last year, and finally to a podium finish in multiple categories this year, we are excited for what the future holds. Our progress this year reflects the dedication of our members, a structured and analytical design approach, intentional knowledge transfer to new Aero students, and the support of our faculty advisors and team sponsors.
Thank you to our sponsors; our success would not have been possible without them! Our ability to construct three aircraft this year was largely influenced by their contributions. If you would like to join our sponsors and have your company’s name on our aircraft for the 2027 SAE Aero Design competition season, please reach out for more information!

This past weekend, the Pioneer Flyers competed in an outstanding competition at the 2025 SAE Aero Design East in Fort Worth, Texas. Our plane "Squires" was easily a crowd favorite. The team came home with a fantastic score and fresh new ideas for future designs!

Some highlights from the weekend were:
- Being the first team through technical inspection on Friday
- Receiving the highest score on our design report and presentation for our team in over 4 years
- Completing 5 successful competition flight rounds while increasing payload
- Receiving the highest flight score for the team in over a decade
- Building connections with our fellow SAE Aero Design competitors

A huge thank you to all of our team sponsors this year! Without their continuous support, none of this would be possible!

Sam has been a very important part of SAE Aero and SAE as a whole. He’s served in various roles, most notably Aero Co-Captain, our pilot at comp, and president of SAE. He has been a great leader, and has worked hard mentoring many younger members. He will be graduating with a degree in electrical engineering this May. Thank you Sam

A big thank you to Logan and everything he has done for this team in these last 4 years. Logan will be graduating this spring with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in math. He has been Co-Captain of Aero for the past two years.

What helped the most in jobs and internships?

People Skills and learning how to learn on the job. A lot of the main skillsets from Aero don’t correlate what I am doing for work now, but the skill of learning quickly on the job and problem solving has made me favorable in the companies’ eyes as they don’t have to keep a constant watch over me while I am learning my job.
