The Army Corps of Engineers and allies want to bulldoze this magnificent wild jewel of L.A. The Ballona Wetlands is a significant stopover on the migration path for birds and butterflies. Native plants of the LA coastal plain grow here that are either rare or gone from our region. Part of an extensive mosaic of diverse ecological habitat types, the greater Ballona Wetlands ecosystem was created by
the confluence of where historically the Los Angeles River and three other streams met the sea. More than 1,000 acres of state, city and county owned lands, a cradle of life to literally thousands of species, the Ballona Wetlands is in the heart of the Pacific Flyway and in the center of Santa Monica Bay. The 600+ acres of land now owned by the State of California is under threat from a terribly misguided plan to bulldoze, dredge, extinguish and alter the habitats that currently are home to many imperiled and threatened species - many of which currently live nowhere else on the Los Angeles coast.
