Be very weather away today! High winds and possible tornados in our area! ⛈️ 🏠

‼️ SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER THREAT TODAY for Very Large Hail 🧊 2”+ possible, Damaging Winds greater than 65+ mph💨, and Tornadoes 🌪️ (Some Possibly Strong up to EF2-EF3)

Widespread severe storms are expected later today into tonight from the central Great Plains into the Upper Midwest, with a window for strong tornadoes before storms grow into a line.

➡️ PRIMARY THREATS ARE:

🧊 VERY LARGE HAIL POSSIBLE: Initial supercells may produce hail over 2 inches, especially early.

💨 DAMAGING WINDS (WIDESPREAD POSSIBLE): Storms are expected to grow upscale into a QLCS/organized line, producing widespread strong winds ranging greater than 65 mph with localized higher amounts above 75 possible.

🌪️ TORNADOES POSSIBLE (SOME STRONG): A few tornadoes are possible, including strong tornadoes early before storms organize, with additional embedded tornado potential later. EF2-EF3 range is forecasted depending on location.

➡️ WHAT TO EXPECT TIMEFRAME:

• Afternoon: Discrete supercells develop from KS into MO and IA/WI corridor

• Late Afternoon: Window for strong tornadoes with discrete storms

• Evening – Night: Storms grow into a QLCS/line with damaging winds and embedded tornadoes

➡️ MORE DETAILS WITH REGARDS TO THE FORECAST:

A corridor from south-central Kansas into northwest Missouri will support initial supercell development with all hazards possible.

Another corridor from western Iowa into western Wisconsin may see discrete supercells capable of strong tornadoes up to EF3 before storms grow upscale.

Storms are expected to rapidly organize into a line, with widespread damaging winds and brief tornadoes along the leading edge.

Additional development may occur near the cold front/dryline intersection in KS/OK, though development there remains more uncertain.

⚠️ PLEASE be weather aware, have more than one way to receive warnings, and DO NOT SLEEP NAKED on this setup‼️

The new Storm Prediction Center outlooks expands the threat areas across the northern and southern modes. The greatest threat of am EF2+ tornado will be along the warm frontal zone in central/northern Illinois into northern Indiana.

Upper 60s dew points along an Illinois warm front in early March should do big things. We expect at least two waves of intense supercells to traverse the warm front with a lead mode developing as early as 3-4 pm in northern Illinois, followed by a more widespread evening wave of supercells.

Stay tuned to severe weather watches and warnings tomorrow from Texas to Illinois/Indiana

Friday

Supercells have the potential to produce tornadoes, large hail, and severe wind gusts. The greatest risk is forecasted near the Red River in northern Texas, moving northeastward across eastern Oklahoma into eastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri. A 30 percent contour has been added to this area. A severe threat is also forecasted northeastward into parts of the mid-to-upper Mississippi Valley, where strong deep-layer shear and sufficient low-level moisture will be present for a severe threat.
