Some of the best inspiration comes from listening to the people behind the design.

We loved hearing the vision behind this space and the intentional thinking that shaped it. A home designed almost like a glass box, where the windows weren’t just there for natural light, but to fully connect the interior to two completely different landscapes. Forest to one side. Cliffside views to the other. Two experiences happening at once from inside the same room.

It’s a reminder that windows do far more than frame a view. They shape how a space feels, how light moves throughout the day, and how connected a home feels to its surroundings. They influence both exterior architecture and interior experience in a way few materials can.
That’s part of why brands like Marvin continue to stand out in the architectural world.

Marvin has been a family-owned window and door manufacturer for more than 100 years and is widely known for its craftsmanship, customization, large-format architectural windows, and design-forward approach. Their products are frequently used in custom homes and high-end residential projects where performance and aesthetics both matter.

As builders and design-build professionals, we learn a lot by paying attention to how architects and designers think through a space long before construction even begins. Watching how others approach light, flow, views, materials, and experience is part of what continually sharpens our own perspective.

Finishing touches on an elevated carport rebuild in San Rafael.

This phase shows the concrete finish being installed over the waterproofing system before final completion.

A lot of the work on structures like this happens below the surface. Proper waterproofing, drainage, and surface preparation all play a big role in protecting the structure long term.

Most office noise problems aren’t actually about noise. They’re about control.

I read an article recently in that broke down how sound really functions in a modern workplace. The takeaway wasn’t “make everything quieter.” It was much more specific than that.

Sound is measurable. And when you measure it, you realize most offices aren’t designed for how people actually work today.

A few things that stood out:
• Around 55 dB is where a space starts to feel active and collaborative
• Deep focus doesn’t happen until you get closer to 30–35 dB
• Acoustic ceiling systems alone can reduce sound by 10–20 dB
• And maybe the most overlooked point, consistent background noise is less disruptive than sudden spikes

That last one matters more than people think.
In the field, we see this play out all the time. It’s not the steady HVAC hum or general activity that causes problems. It’s sharp, uncontrolled noise. Voices carrying across hard surfaces. Sound bouncing in spaces that were never designed to absorb it.

That’s usually where productivity breaks down.
In commercial construction, especially with tenant improvements and office renovations, this is where design and build need to work together early.

Because once a space is finished, fixing acoustics becomes expensive and disruptive.

What actually makes a difference:
• Ceiling systems and material selection that absorb, not reflect
• Thoughtful zoning between collaborative areas and focus areas
• Managing reverberation so sound doesn’t carry farther than it should
• Planning mechanical systems so they create a consistent baseline, not competing noise

If you’re planning an office renovation or tenant improvement, acoustics should be part of the conversation early. It’s one of those details that people don’t notice when it’s done right, but immediately feel when it’s not.

Curious how this plays out in real projects? Happy to walk through what we’re seeing across current builds.

Most exterior paint decisions are made off a 4x6 sample.

But paint doesn’t live on a sample. It lives across thousands of square feet, in direct sun, next to stone, roofing, landscaping, and everything else that isn’t changing.

That’s where things start to shift.

A bright white that looks clean in-store can read harsh and flat on a full exterior. Cooler grays that were popular a few years ago can start to feel blue or washed out in natural light. Even darker colors, if they’re too flat, can absorb light in a way that makes a building feel heavier than intended.

What we’re seeing now is a move toward balance.

Warmer whites that reflect light without glaring.
Neutrals with enough depth to hold up across an entire elevation.
Earth tones that connect better with materials like stone and wood.
And darker accents that are used with precision, not as a default.

It’s less about picking a “color” and more about understanding how that color behaves once it’s applied at scale.

Exterior painting is something we handle as part of many of our projects, and it’s one of the decisions that has a bigger impact than most people expect. Done right, it can completely change how a property reads from the street.

If you had to choose, which direction would you go right now?

One thing I talk about with our team all the time is communication.

No matter what, always communicate.

Before a project starts, while the work is happening, and after everything is finished, we stay in close contact with our clients. A lot of conversations happen in person on site, but we always follow up by email so nothing gets lost or misunderstood.

That follow-up is where clarity really matters. Everyone should know the scope of work, who’s responsible for what, and what to expect as the project moves forward.

For example, if a client speaks with one of our on-site supervisors, that information gets shared with the estimator right away so the scope stays aligned and the details don’t slip through the cracks.

The goal is to do the coordination early so the construction phase feels organized, predictable, and a lot less stressful for everyone involved.

Sometimes everything can feel urgent at once. We hear this a lot from HOA boards and property managers.

When that happens, the goal isn’t to react to every issue the same way. It’s separating what needs immediate attention from what can be planned.

Safety issues, water intrusion, and structural concerns usually come first. From there, we look at how conditions are trending and what can be addressed over time instead of all at once.

Walkthroughs, inspections, and clear information help boards move from reacting to actually prioritizing. That makes it easier to plan budgets, schedule work, and make decisions with more confidence, even when the list feels long.

If you were repainting today, which direction would you choose?

Most exterior palettes we’re seeing right now fall into one of these three directions, and each one creates a completely different feel on a property.

Earthy neutrals and warm whites lean timeless.
Soft taupes, greiges, and creamy tones that feel clean, balanced, and easy to maintain over time.
Nature-inspired greens bring a more organic look.
Muted sage and olive tones that blend into the surroundings and feel more grounded.

High-contrast modern is more architectural.
Light base colors paired with darker accents like charcoal or black to create depth and definition.

The right choice usually isn’t just about what looks good in photos.
It’s about how it works with the building, the materials, and how it will age over time.

If you've ever been burned by a contractor who disappeared mid-project or doubled the original budget, you already know what bad construction management costs.

Transparency isn't a bonus, it's the baseline. Here's what to look for when vetting your next contractor: clear scope documentation, fixed milestone check-ins, and a team that answers the phone.

We recently completed a full interior renovation at Dent Pro in Concord, partnering with Carter Design Group on both the lower and upper levels.

Carter’s team led the design with a clear, cohesive vision, balancing aesthetics with how the space actually needs to function day to day. Our role was to bring that vision to life through construction, coordinating closely to ensure every detail translated from plan to built environment.

The scope included new flooring throughout, fresh interior finishes, a complete bathroom renovation, and the build-out of updated office spaces and a dedicated meeting room on the upper level. Each element was approached with consistency in mind, so the space feels connected from one area to the next.

The end result is clean, modern, and highly functional. A workspace that reflects the business it supports and works just as well behind the scenes as it does at first glance.

We appreciate the opportunity to work alongside Cathy and the Carter Design Group team on this one.
