Have you changed your furnace filter? Dirty filters are the most common cause of furnace problems. Dust and dirt restrict airflow—and if the filter gets too clogged, the heat exchanger will overheat and shut off too quickly, and your house won't warm up. If the blower is running but no heat is coming out, replace the filter.

Today's tip: Change your furnace filter! We had a customer over the weekend who had a filter that was so dirty no air could move through it, so the furnace shut off. It was a costly service call that could be avoided. You should change your filter at least once every 90 days. A good rule of thumb - if the season changes, it's time to change your filter! And check it at least once a month, just to be on the safe side. It will cost you less in the long run.

We're in for a stretch of very cold weather. So we'd like to share some tips with you regarding getting optimal performance from your furnace.

1. Change your filter! Even if your filter has recently been changed, it's a good idea to change it again or at least check it. Your furnace will be running a LOT during the next week.

2. Make sure your carbon monoxide detectors are working.

3. If you have a 90%+ efficient furnace, make sure the intake and exhaust vents on the outside of your house are clear from snow and ice. Check this periodically through the week. If they're on the roof, do NOT go up on the roof

4. If you have a programmable thermostat, take it OFF programmable and put it at HOLD. Set it for one temperature. If you're used to 70 degrees, set it 3 or 4 degrees higher. If the temperatures drop in your home, it will not be able to recover until sub-zero temperatures rise and the windchill diminishes. Our heating systems cannot overcome temperatures -10 to -20 with wind chill up to -50+. Put your thermostat on hold 70 degrees or higher. Furnaces in our climate are designed to maintain 72 degrees at -5 below zero and does not include windchill and infiltration.

5. Keep garage doors closed. Limit opening exterior doors.

6. Close all curtains and blinds to keep the heat in and stop drafts. Seal all leaking windows and doors.

7. To help minimize temperature loss you can boil water, make soup, or stews; they help introduce humidity and warmer temperatures into your home. DO NOT USE YOUR OVEN or a GRILL TO HEAT YOUR HOME. Please check on neighbors and elderly residents during these extreme temperatures. Stay warm and safe this week and share this information with friends and family.

If you are having trouble with your furnace, call us at 892-2911 immediately. If you're without heat, pipes will begin to freeze in 6 hours or less.

Stay safe, Stay warm and bring your pets inside.

Do you know how old your AC is off the top of your head? You might if your house was new when you purchased it, because you almost certainly know how long you’ve owned the house. But if you inherited an older AC system when you moved in, you may not have a solid idea how long the cooling system has been there. It’s easy to check, however: look at the nameplate attached to the back of the outdoor unit. It should have a manufacturer’s date on it. If it doesn’t, write down the serial and model number and call us. We can tell you how old the system is.

If your air conditioner is more than 15 years old, it may be time to think about a replacement. Once a unit is older than 15 years, the risk of a major failure and higher cooling bills increases steeply. You can get ahead of these problems and install a new system—one with better energy efficiency than the current one ever had.

If you'd like a quote on a new air conditioning unit for your home, please give us a call at 920-892-2911.

No Fooling! It may be time to change your furnace filter!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the air we breathe indoors is five times more polluted than the air outdoors. That’s a staggering fact that only gets worse when the furnace filter becomes clogged with dirt, dust, pet dander, and other particles that flow through our indoor air. Regardless of how clean your home is, these small particles are present in every house. If you don’t change the furnace filter, it will continue to pile up on the filter, making it a strain on the furnace itself, and polluting the air inside the home even more. Changing the furnace filter is a quick and easy way to keep your furnace operating at its best, and clean up the air you breathe, too.

Signs it’s time to change the furnace filter. Most filters will need to be changed every 90 days, however it may need to be done more often if you have pets. Here are a few signs that you need to do it:

– You hear your heating system kick on more often than you consider normal.
– Your home seems to be dustier than usual.
– When the unit comes on, you smell a dirty, dusty odor.
– Your nasal passages feel blocked, or you develop sores inside your nose.
– You see dust and/or dirt around air vents in the home.
