The cheapest option upfront isn’t always the least expensive in the long run.

In HVAC and refrigeration, quality matters – from the equipment installed to the workmanship behind it. Quick fixes, rushed installs, and cut corners often lead to repeat issues, unexpected downtime, and higher costs down the road.

At Northstar Refrigeration, we believe in doing the job right the first time. That means experienced technicians, clear communication, dependable service, and long-term solutions built around your facility’s needs.

Because when your systems are critical to your operation, reliability is always the better investment.

Most HVAC failures don't happen overnight. The warning signs were there all along.
Increasing runtimes. Minor temperature fluctuations. Repeated alarms. Rising energy consumption.
This week on Northstar University, we're breaking down the early indicators of HVAC and refrigeration issues—and why paying attention to them can help facilities avoid costly downtime.

Most HVAC failures don’t happen overnight. The rooftop unit that stops cooling during a heat wave. The air handler that suddenly goes offline. The refrigeration system that trips during a busy production day. While these events may seem sudden, the reality is often very different. In most cases, t...

❄️ CO₂sdays with Northstar Refrigeration ❄️

A CO₂ refrigeration system may look different from traditional refrigeration systems, but many of the core components work together toward the same goal: efficient heat transfer and reliable cooling.

Some of the most common components inside a CO₂ system include:

• Compressors – move refrigerant through the system and increase pressure
• Gas Coolers – reject heat from the refrigerant to the outdoor environment
• Receivers – store refrigerant and help manage system operation
• Evaporators – absorb heat from the refrigerated space
• Valves & Controls – regulate pressure, temperature, and refrigerant flow
• Parallel Compression & Ejectors (on some systems) – improve efficiency and system performance

Because CO₂ operates at higher pressures and behaves differently than traditional refrigerants, proper component selection and system design are critical.

As more facilities transition toward natural refrigerants, understanding these system fundamentals becomes increasingly important.

Temperature only tells part of the story.
This week on Northstar University, we’re breaking down the critical HVAC and refrigeration metrics facility managers should track besides temperature — from airflow and humidity to pressure trends and runtime data.
The most costly system problems often start long before comfort complaints appear.

When evaluating HVAC and refrigeration system performance, temperature tends to get all the attention. If a space feels comfortable or a cooler holds setpoint, many facilities assume everything is working properly. But temperature alone only tells part of the story. In reality, some of the most impo...

CO₂sdays with Northstar Refrigeration ❄️

One of the biggest misconceptions about CO₂ refrigeration systems is that they can be serviced exactly like traditional refrigeration systems.

In reality, CO₂ systems operate differently — from higher operating pressures to advanced controls and transcritical operation. That means they require a different service mindset to support long-term reliability, efficiency, and performance.

Understanding how CO₂ systems behave is critical when designing, operating, and maintaining future-ready refrigeration systems.

As more facilities continue adopting natural refrigerants, proper system knowledge and proactive service strategies become more important than ever.

Follow Northstar Refrigeration for more CO₂sdays insights and natural refrigerant education each week.

Why do so many HVAC systems fail during the first heat wave of the year? Because extreme heat exposes the small problems facilities didn’t know were there.

This week on Northstar University, we break down why systems struggle when temperatures spike — and what facility owners should do before peak summer demand arrives.

Every year, the pattern repeats itself. The first major heat wave arrives… and suddenly HVAC systems across commercial buildings begin failing. Emergency calls spike. Occupants complain about uneven cooling. Equipment that seemed fine in spring suddenly struggles to maintain setpoints. So why does...

This week’s heat wave wasn’t just uncomfortable, for many facilities, it was an early warning sign. When commercial HVAC systems struggle during the first major heat event of the season, it’s often an indication that underlying performance issues are already present.

Some of the most common warning signs include:

• Uneven cooling

• Longer runtimes

• Difficulty maintaining setpoints

• Rising energy usage

• Occupant comfort complaints
These issues may seem minor now, but small performance problems in May can quickly become major downtime events in July. The first heat wave of the year tends to expose systems already under strain from deferred maintenance, airflow restrictions, controls issues, or aging equipment. Addressing those problems early can help improve reliability, efficiency, and occupant comfort throughout the summer months.

If your system struggled this week, don’t ignore it.

Need support preparing your facility for peak summer demand? Northstar Refrigeration is here to help evaluate system performance before small issues turn into costly downtime.
