There's something in your house right now working harder than anything else you own. And most people never touch it until it stops working.

If your AC breaks in the middle of summer, try not to panic.

Before you call anyone, do these 4 things. You might not even need a technician.

1. Check your thermostat. Make sure it's set to COOL, not just FAN. And set it at least 5 degrees below the current room temperature so the system actually kicks on.

2. Check your circuit breaker. AC units have their own breaker. Go to your panel and look for anything that's tripped. Reset it once. If it trips again, that's an electrical issue and you need a tech.

3. Check your air filter. A filter that's completely clogged can cause your system to freeze up and shut itself off as a safety measure. Swap it out and give the unit 30 minutes to reset.

4. Check your drain line. In Florida, these clog with algae and mold fast. Most units have a safety float switch that shuts the system off when the drain line is full. Look for a PVC pipe near your indoor unit, if it's backed up, that's likely your problem.

If you've done all four and it's still not running, then it's time to call someone.

When you do call, ask them if they charge a diagnostic fee and if that fee gets applied toward the repair. A company that's confident in their work will say yes.

If something goes wrong with your AC a year after it's installed, do you know who pays for it? Most homeowners have no idea.

Your unit comes with a manufacturer's warranty that covers the parts.

But the labor? That's on the company that installed it.

And most companies in Port St. Lucie give you one year on labor.

After that, if something goes wrong with the installation, you're paying out of pocket.

So you could have a brand new unit, something goes wrong in month 13, and the parts are covered but you're still writing a check for the labor.

I think that's worth knowing before you hire anyone.

At Harmony Air we offer a 2 year labor warranty with every installation. Because if I installed it, I want to know it's still running right two years later.

That's just how I was trained in the army. You do the job right and you stand behind it.

Before you hire any HVAC company, ask them one question: what does your labor warranty actually cover and for how long?

If your AC broke down tomorrow, would you be surprised? Because you probably shouldn't be.

Here's what most homeowners never check and what every good HVAC tech looks at when they service a unit 🔧

What you can do yourself:

❄️ Your air filter. If it's gray or black, change it today. A clogged filter makes your system work twice as hard and is the #1 cause of preventable breakdowns.

💨 Your vents. Make sure none of them are blocked by furniture. Restricted airflow puts stress on the whole system.

🎚️Your thermostat. If it's over 10 years old, it might not be reading your home's temperature accurately. That alone can make your unit run longer than it needs to.

What a tech should check for you:

🧰 Your evaporator and condenser coils. When these get dirty, your system loses efficiency fast and you feel it on your electric bill before you feel it in your house.

💧Your drain line. In Florida's humidity, these clog constantly. A blocked drain line can shut your whole system down without warning.

🛢️Refrigerant levels. Low refrigerant doesn't just mean less cooling, but it also means your compressor is working harder every single day, shortening the life of your unit.

Most of these take 10 minutes to check. Most people never do it.
