🔌 GENERATOR SAFETY TIP: SWITCH KIT vs. EXTENSION CORDS
So you got yourself a generator that could power the whole house, you’re definitely not digging the trailing power cords each black out.
So let’s get in to it. I want to make sure the info is freely out there…
If you’re using a portable generator during a power outage, how you connect it to your home matters just as much as the generator itself.
⚡ TRANSFER SWITCH: A properly installed transfer switch lets you safely power selected household circuits from your generator while keeping generator power separated from utility power.
đź”’ INTERLOCK KIT: On compatible electrical panels, an interlock mechanically prevents the main utility breaker and generator breaker from being ON at the same time. It can be a practical option for powering selected circuits, but it must be compatible with the panel and installed correctly.
🔌 EXTENSION CORDS: These can be appropriate for directly powering individual appliances, provided the generator and cords are properly rated. Do NOT use an extension cord to backfeed your home’s electrical panel.
🚨 WHY THIS MATTERS: Improper connections can cause dangerous backfeeding, potentially energizing utility lines and putting utility workers and others at risk.
🏠IMPORTANT: A transfer switch or interlock kit does NOT make it safe to run a generator indoors. Generators must be operated outside and away from doors, windows, and vents because they produce deadly carbon monoxide.
