The owners of this remote retreat in Eastern Oregon envisioned a home where they could live in rhythm with the changing seasons and natural cycles of the day. Whether watching snow fall across the landscape or waking with the warmth of the rising sun, they wanted to feel immersed in nature from the very first moments of the day.

Equally important was sourcing low-carbon, locally rooted materials.

Like the rest of the home, the walls of the primary bedroom are clad in white fir tongue-and-groove boards milled just 20 miles away by Jay Zee Lumber, a small, sustainably managed logging operation run by third-generation logger Jim Zacharias.

We are so grateful to partners like Jim and for helping bring our vision to life.

Especially for a new build or major renovation, reducing a home’s carbon footprint is one of the highest-impact design decisions you can make.

Manufacturing drywall is highly energy- and carbon-intensive. So, at the Wallowa Retreat, we eliminated it altogether. Instead, we clad the home’s interior with locally harvested white fir tongue-and-groove boards, creating a warm, biophilic environment with a calm, hygge-inspired feel throughout.

Here’s a side-by-side of a rendering and recent photo of the tranquil living room, which offers expansive views of the river below.

We’re putting the final touches on this custom home where sustainability takes center stage, and we look forward to sharing more photos soon!

72 jobs, and this one is her favorite.

And it’s not just because she gets to ride a tricycle around all day.

Ella Rose Kelly is the head cashier at ‪ReBuilding Center, Portland’s beloved reclaim, reuse, recycle store for home construction projects.

This is what reuse looks like in Portland.

We’re thrilled to celebrate Michelle in her latest achievement: achieving licensure as an architect.

Throughout the process, she has brought creativity, thoughtfulness and dedication to every project and client relationship. For many years, she’s been an integral part of our team, and we can’t wait to see how her career progresses.

Let the light in!

This time of year, as the days get longer, spaces like this one are all the more comforting.

By adding a 22-foot-long accordion door and a 15-foot-long triple-pane skylight to the central great room of this Portland home, we transformed this one cavernous space into a bright, welcoming place to gather with friends and family.

Check out the latest issue of 1859 Oregon's Magazine to tour one of our favorite projects: a whole-home renovation for an Oregon couple living and making wine in the Willamette Valley.

We appreciate everyone who contributed to the story, including our wonderful clients, Adam and Caroline Campbell of Elk Cove Vineyard, Green Hammer architect, Jon Lundstrom, and photographer George Barberis.

We always appreciate opportunities to learn from others who care deeply about the future of the built environment. The Living Future Conference, taking place April 14–17 in Seattle, is one of those gatherings.

This year’s theme focuses on designing for longevity. This is more than a concept at Green Hammer. It's a practice that resonates with our belief that buildings should be designed and built with materials and systems meant to last 100 years or more.

We look forward to connecting with others who are exploring regenerative materials, circular systems, and biophilic design in their work.
