I grew up in a working-class Latino household and have worked my share of minimum wage jobs. I mentioned warehouse and delivery because that’s the kind of work people often assume I do when I say where I work. As a first-gen, low-income Latino, I’ve constantly been underestimated because of those assumptions. The point was to push back on that and show that people from backgrounds like mine can make it into fields like software engineering. This wasn’t shade. I have nothing but respect for those doing that work ❤️It comes from pride in my roots and everything it took to get here. -

This spring, I was the only first generation Mexican woman graduating with a masters in Electrical Engineering/Controls 🇲🇽❤️👷🏻‍♀️
My name is Karla Lopez. I was once just a 13 year old whose first field trip after arriving in this country was at USC. When my brown little eyes saw this school for the first time, I knew this is where I would be one day.

The road wasn’t easy. Coming to a new country and leaving my parents behind was full of obstacles, but my dreams have always been bigger than any adversity I’ve ever encountered.

Engineering is so challenging, but challenge always comes with beauty. As an immigrant woman of color in my field, I faced every challenge you can think of. Looking back on my struggles, all I can think of is how happy it makes me to know I did this to pave the path for other women like me.

If you are reading this, I want you to know that no obstacle is bigger than your dreams, despite your economic status, legal status, gender, or race.

Now that I graduated, I am beyond excited to share my story and help other women like me. We are here, in these fields, we are ingenieras and we make the impossible possible ❤️💛👷🏻‍♀️ -
