👉 Scientists. Loggers. We’re proof they can all happily co-exist. We were born and raised among the trees. So we do everything we can to protect them. Following the Oregon Forest Practices Act we use scientifically- supported methods to sustainably harvest and replant the Douglas Fir trees on our 17,000 acres of timberland. And we respect our natural resources using every part of the wood from lumber, to veneer, to fuel. The result is a certification by the American Tree Farm System (ATFS). Our companies include Freres Lumber Co., Inc, Freres Timber, and Evergreen BioPower LLC. Freres Lumber has two manufacturing locations in the Santiam Canyon. Freres Timber owns and operates over 17,000 acres of timberland, primarily located in the Santiam Canyon. Harvesting is performed on a sustained yield basis, and is managed to provide high quality timber for current and future generations.

A steady plywood market just got a new variable.

Western plywood has continued to outperform SYP plywood and OSB in both price appreciation and sales pace, while customers remain focused on just-in-time buying. Now, new 50% U.S. tariffs on Canadian plywood and veneer are adding another layer of uncertainty.

A new 980 front-end loader has joined the lineup 👏

This machine replaces one with a lot of hours behind it, and it brings a few upgrades our team is already appreciating, including new-style joystick controls and perimeter cameras to support safer operation.

A well-earned sendoff for Curtis Steckler! 👏

After 15 years with Freres, Curtis retired from his role as Electrical Superintendent. We’re grateful for everything he has brought to the team over the years and glad we had the chance to celebrate him with a retirement lunch.

Mass timber has decades of history behind it.

In places like Europe, it has already been part of the building landscape for years. Here in North America, we're bringing mass timber into more codes, approvals, financing conversations, and project teams.

Wood products markets are moving on several fronts at once.

Plywood pricing has improved. Veneer is gaining ground, but slowly. Mass timber has its strongest order file since the facility opened. At the same time, tariffs, wildfire, transportation costs, and log prices continue to shape the market.

The word “logging” carries a lot of baggage.

But in forest management, context changes everything. In many overstocked forests, active management can help improve ecological conditions and reduce the risk of losing more to severe disturbance.

When done correctly, cutting a tree can be part of protecting the forest.

After several flat weeks, western plywood saw a noticeable pickup in buying through July. OSB, on the other hand, has continued to lag behind.

Mills create a place for wood from forest management work to go. Restoration, thinning, and stewardship all require practical infrastructure to make the work possible.
