Freres Wood

Freres Wood Celebrating 100 years of specializing in high-quality, American-made engineered wood products. 👉 Celebrating 100 years of traditional innovation. Naturalists.

This family owned and operated business started with one man and a dream back in 1922. And it’s kept going to this day by always looking at things in a new way. From the expansion of plywood after World War II to today’s revolutionary Mass Ply, even how we grow and harvest our wood, we’ve never been one to sit still with the status quo. You’ll always find us pushing forward for what we’re confiden

t will be the next 100 years.

👉 Scientists. Loggers. We’re proof they can all happily co-exist. We were born and raised among the trees. So we do everything we can to protect them. Following the Oregon Forest Practices Act we use scientifically- supported methods to sustainably harvest and replant the Douglas Fir trees on our 17,000 acres of timberland. And we respect our natural resources using every part of the wood from lumber, to veneer, to fuel. The result is a certification by the American Tree Farm System (ATFS). Our companies include Freres Lumber Co., Inc, Freres Timber, and Evergreen BioPower LLC. Freres Lumber has two manufacturing locations in the Santiam Canyon. Freres Timber owns and operates over 17,000 acres of timberland, primarily located in the Santiam Canyon. Harvesting is performed on a sustained yield basis, and is managed to provide high quality timber for current and future generations.

If we believe in housing, we have to believe in building.

The real question is what we choose to build with.

Mass timber and wood products offer something steel and concrete can’t: renewability. And when we think about the impact of building at scale, the material choice deserves a closer look.

Thank you to Joe Furia, Executive Director & President at World Forestry Center.

A successful MPP project starts long before the panels arrive on site.

Early planning can help project teams make smarter decisions around design, fabrication, delivery, and installation. It can also reduce guesswork once materials are ordered and the work moves into the field.

Forests have shaped our work for more than a century, so we were honored to receive the Environmental Corporate Impact Award from Portland Business Journal’s Philanthropy Summit & Impact Awards.

Thank you to Portland Business Journal and World Forestry Center for the opportunity to be part of work that supports forests and communities.

Then and now. 👇

One photo shows the old roller stamp used to mark plywood units. The other shows the newer ink jet printer that can stencil a wide range of graphics and text directly onto the unit.

Not the flashiest piece of technology in the mill, but pretty cool to see side by side.

Congrats to the Thunderbolt Robotics club who we supported through the Freres Foundation!

Thunderbolt placed 26th in nationals out of a field of hundreds of competitors. Programs like these are training the next generation of technology leaders needed in industries like ours.

Lyons Rural Fire District recently performed a burn-to-learn on a dilapidated mobile home.

The Lyons RFD is an outstanding group of volunteers that is integral to our community, and has saved our bacon in the past.

Congratulations to the Chief, Bob Johnston, on his upcoming retirement, and to James Grover as he steps into the role of Chief. We appreciate everything both have done for this community.

Thank you to KOIN 6 for stopping by and sharing more about our Mass Ply. 👏

From PDX airport to the people and forests that make our work possible, we appreciate the opportunity to talk about where our industry is headed and what innovation in wood products can look like here in Oregon.

Project Highlight: Inn the Ground Bed & Breakfast

Designed to blend with its natural surroundings, this project used our Mass Ply Panels to create a roof structure that brings warmth, long spans, and exposed wood design together in one space.

The project highlights how mass timber can support both performance and atmosphere, using engineered wood to create a structure that feels connected to the environment around it.

Next time you walk through PDX, keep an eye out for a familiar face.

As part of the new “Locals Made PDX the Most Local-est Airport Yet” installation, our Plant 6 Manager, Ed Setzer, is featured among the people who helped bring the new terminal to life. His photo says it best:

“Our plant made all the mass plywood.”

If you spot Ed on your way to baggage claim from the B and C concourses, snap a selfie and tag us. We’d love to see it. 👏
