It's hot. The water’s not.
Please wear a life jacket.

Of course, you’re not jumping into the water because it’s warm. (We just love a good rhyme.) But the water you’re plunging into could be life-threateningly chilly.

Jumping or falling into cold water can be a dangerous shock to your body. Even the most experienced swimmers could quickly lose muscle control.

Enter: life jacket.

Wearing a properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device can save your life.

Quick pre-weekend PSA before y’all head outdoors to enjoy the nice weather.

This kind of thing (along with vandalism) is a real problem at our recreation sites. But it hurts more than just our infrastructure. It hurts our pocketbook, which means, as taxpayers, it hurts yours, too.

We love being one of the nation's largest providers of water-based recreation. We love that we get to welcome 4.5 million visitors to our lands every year. And frankly, we love interacting with you. (You’re pretty cool.)

Just meet us halfway. Help keep our parks, campgrounds and other lands—and heck, any natural spaces you visit—nice so we can all enjoy them for generations to come.

Also, our park rangers would probably love to spend their time doing more productive things—like reminding you to wear your life jacket.

Sincerely,
PDX-USACE

This is your official invitation: Come celebrate Pacific lamprey with us at Bonneville Dam!

Last summer, we hosted an event at Bonneville called Lampreypalooza. The goal? To share a day of science, storytelling, and up-close encounters with one of the Northwest’s most ancient and culturally significant native fish.

Obviously, it was awesome.
So, we’re doing it again this year!

When: Wednesday, June 24, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Bonneville Dam (Bradford Island Visitor Center)

Open to the public. Totally free!

What’s in store for you at Lampreypalooza?
-- Get an up-close look at these fascinating ancient fish in a live lamprey viewing tank
-- Learn about Pacific lamprey from the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (CRITFC) and the Pacific Lamprey Conservation Initiative (PLCI)
-- Watch a demonstration by CRITFC fisheries experts showing lamprey trapping methods
-- Learn about lamprey migration and fish passage at Bonneville Dam
-- Explore tables and exhibits from a wide range of partners, including Yakama Nation Fisheries, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR), and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
-- See lamprey tagging technology, eDNA displays
-- Check out a really cool lamprey art project
-- And more!

Why celebrate Pacific lamprey?
Pacific lamprey are a key species in the Columbia River Basin. They’re culturally significant to Tribal Nations, play an important role in the food web, and have survived hundreds of millions of years of environmental change. Lampreypalooza shines a light on these ancient fish and the strong partnerships working to protect them for future generations.

Wanna brag about boarding the smallest vessel at Portland Fleet Week? Come see us!

Our survey vessel Redlinger will be moored (as pictured) along Tom McCall Waterfront Park this weekend with other much more massive vessels.

But hey, small size ≠ small mission.

The Redlinger is small and not nearly as impressive looking when you compare it to the enormous Coast Guard and Navy vessels at Fleet Week. But it has one very big (and very impressive) mission: ensuring our waterways remain navigable for the big ships.

It belongs to our district’s fleet of hydrosurvey vessels. These boats collect hydrographic survey data from rivers, inlets, and harbors to determine where maintenance dredging is needed along 244 navigable river miles and 22 ports.

That data ultimately allows us to keep the region’s waterways clear for the safe and reliable transit of billions of dollars in commerce annually. Along the Columbia-Snake River System alone, that number is about $25 billion annually.

Low rainfall and snowpack have resulted in one of the driest years on record for our Willamette and Rogue reservoirs. Here's what that means:

This Dam Safety Awareness Day, spend some time getting to know the dam near you.

You may even live near multiple dams.

While dams provide numerous benefits—from flood risk reduction to the generation of clean, renewable energy—they also pose some risks.

Our dam safety program is all about keeping our infrastructure in optimal shape so that it poses minimal risk to the public while still adding value.

But no dam is completely risk-free.

You can do your part to stay safe by visiting the National Inventory of Dams (link in comments) and learning about the dams in your area.
