A dirty filter can make your AC work harder than it should. During the heavy cooling season, your system is moving a lot of air, and a clogged filter restricts that flow. Turning on your AC for the first time this season? Take a minute to listen to it.

Your system should start up smoothly and run quietly. If it doesn't, those sounds are often the first sign that something needs attention. A rattling noise may point to something loose inside the unit. A buzzing sound can suggest an electrical issue or a failing component. Grinding or clicking that doesn't stop shortly after startup is worth paying attention to as well.

These sounds are easy to dismiss, especially if the system still seems to be cooling. But catching a small problem early is almost always less disruptive and less expensive than waiting for a full breakdown on a 90-degree day.

The best time to test your AC is before you need it every day.

After sitting unused all winter, your cooling system may not be in the same condition it was when you shut it off last fall. Dust builds up, components wear, and in some cases, pests like mice can get into outdoor equipment and cause damage you won't see until the system tries to start.

A quick test run now can save you a lot of frustration later. Set your thermostat to cool and let the system run for a few minutes.
