Sorry in advance for the long post but as this is here in our backyard I thought I’d share.

Not All HVAC Installations Are Created Equal

We were called to a 3 year old luxury home this week because the homeowner, who purchased the home this last October, couldn’t keep the house comfortable. It was over 90° outside, and the inside temperature was hovering around 80°.

These are photos of what we found.

This isn’t meant to criticize another company. It’s meant to educate.

The reality is that an HVAC system is only as good as the design and installation behind it.

Anyone can set a piece of equipment in place. The hard part is designing a system that actually performs.

A quality installation starts long before the equipment ever arrives. It requires:

• A proper Manual J load calculation to determine the home’s heating and cooling needs.
• Proper equipment sizing not simply installing “whatever fits.”
• Correct duct sizing and layout to deliver the right amount of airflow to every room.
• Careful installation practices that minimize restrictions, leakage, and airflow problems.

Air conditioning systems aren’t like a television where you just plug them in and expect everything to work perfectly.

If the duct system isn’t designed correctly, the most expensive HVAC equipment on the market still won’t perform the way it should.

When you build or buy a home, remember that the HVAC contractor is one of the most important trades on the project. The difference between a great installation and a poor one can mean years of comfort or years of high electric bills, hot rooms, humidity issues, and expensive service calls.

There are a lot of excellent HVAC contractors out there, and there are some that cut corners. Don’t make your decision based solely on the lowest bid. The cheapest price is often the most expensive one in the long run.
