Rubicon Contracting is a residential General Contractor that is fully licensed and insured to work in both Powell and Cody. We are a remodeling contractor specializing in kitchens and bathrooms. While there are many contractors in the area who say they perform remodel work, do not be fooled. It takes YEARS of remodel work to learn the ins and outs of how to overcome obstacles and what to expect in certain situations. Things that you simply do not learn working new construction and room additions. That's not a slam against any builders out there, it's just a fact. I have been remodeling homes for over 25 years and there are things that I have learned that I simply never would have been exposed to if I had restricted myself only to new construction. I absolutely love walking into a home that a customer has no idea what do with a particular space, and I help them transform it into something that they had no idea was possible to achieve. Also having a solid background in architectural drafting, I offer full, in house design services to all of my clients as part of my service. With over 30 years of experience in the trades, there is nothing that we cannot handle. Custom, high end carpentry is our passion and our finish and quality is second to none. There is no better time to take advantage of some of that equity in your home and finally get that kitchen or bathroom of your dreams! I am a cabinet wholesaler and deal exclusively with a supplier to save my clients time and money over dealing with the big box stores while still being able to deliver the custom look and feel without the price tag that generally comes with a custom kitchen or bathroom. I have an extensive list of satisfied references right here in the bighorn basin that would be more than happy to not only speak with you, but let you in to their home to show you my work in person. If you have been considering updating a space in your home to make it more useable, functional or just because you don't really like it anymore, get ahold of Rubicon Contracting today and let us work up a design and an estimate for you and see if we can turn that space you dread into your new favorite hang-out spot in the house!

Here is the 100% custom built in bookcase & fireplace mantle that I recently completed for a customer out off of the Willwood just outside of Powell. He had designed his home to have this built into his living room and had never completed it. He reached out to me to get it done knowing that this type of work is my passion and within my wheelhouse and ability. He didn't have a rigid plan, so to speak, but more of an idea in his head and a bunch of pictures that he showed me. So we came up with a rough idea and just built as we went and he leaned heavily on my experience and input. I think that what we wound up with is pretty magnificent and certainly unique, especially for this area. I'm not saying that I don't like the western theme that is overwhelmingly prevalent here, of which I have definitely contributed to. It's certainly refreshing to see something a little different every once in a while though! If you are looking for true custom carpentry to really set off your home from the rest of the "cookie cutters" in the area, then reach out and give Rubicon Contracting an opportunity to talk with you about your thoughts and ideas and see how I can help you turn them into a reality today! I promise you that you will not be disappointed!

A recently completed full remodel of a customer's bathroom just outside of Powell. This customer contacted me and absolutely hated the guest bathroom in her home that she and her family of four had been living in for the last 10 years. They have bad alkali in their well water which has been wreaking havoc on their corner glass shower stall. She felt that the overall layout of the space was poorly designed and wanted to see if there was some better way to use the space. She also wanted to see if there was any way to fit a bath tub in the bathroom as the only tub in the home was in the master bathroom! Lastly she just desperately wanted to update the space with a cleaner and brighter look. I came up with a brand new layout for the space as design work and drafting are also services that I offer to my customers, and was able to present her with two different options to now have a bath tub in the space. She chose the one that we both felt was the best option and a "full gut" of the space quickly commenced after a contract was signed. Originally she wanted tile walls for her tub & shower surround but with the alkali issues that are present in the well water on her property, I was able to talk her into an Epoxy surround which is 100% mold & mildew proof, will not stain or rot, is waterproof and will wear like iron. I teamed up with Kyle at Beartooth Epoxy to perform the epoxy work and he absolutely knocked it out of the park on the surround panels as well as the vanity countertop and back/side splashes. Now she doesn't have to worry at all about the alkali attacking grout lines and having to do any maintenance to the surround at all, except maybe an occasional caulk job at a seam. A far cry better than having to deal with stained or failing grout! Overall this bathroom turned out phenomenal and is a true "full bath" and a much more efficient use of space. Their teenage daughter is absolutely in love with "HER" new bathroom and already making it her own. I've said it before and I'll say it again, remodeling isn't for everyone. Not everyone has the aptitude, experience and skillset to be able to walk into an existing space and see the potential, let alone BUILD that potential into a quality product while overcoming the obstacles and roadblocks that always rear their ugly heads along the way. If you have a bathroom or kitchen, or any space in your home for that matter, that you are unhappy with and wish there was something better that could be done with it, then give Rubicon Contracting a shout. Remodeling and renovating is our expertise. It's what we do, and I promise that we can make that space you absolutely dread into your own private paradise!

Got pretty creative with this one. Routed out 1/2” 4’x8’ MDF panels to resemble T&G V-rustic pine for the ceilings in the guest bathroom and master closet that I am remodeling. I didn’t want to deal with the cupping, warping, shrinking, splitting and joints that are associated with normal tongue and groove boards, especially pine. Since both of these rooms are less than 8’ in width and the ceilings are being painted, I decided to route the grooves in the panels lengthwise and then cut the panels to length to fit the width of the room. I simply laid them out so that the joints were hidden within the center of a groove. In my 30+ years of carpentry, I have put up a countless amount of tongue and groove pine in both stain grade and paint grade applications. I can honestly say that for a paint grade application this is by far a better end result.

Some before and afters of my most recent little bathroom remodel. This particular customer flat out refused to take a bath in her tub because she couldn’t even fit in it, and really, who could blame her. She was also tired of the cold tile floor while brushing her teeth and putting on her makeup. So out with the old tub and tile floor, along with all of the door casing and baseboard. A new Schluter membrane went down to accept their electric radiant floor heat cable. Then new beadboard went up throughout the entire bathroom for an updated elegant yet timeless look, followed by new luxury vinyl plank (yes, waterproof) flooring and new heavy door casing, baseboard and crown molding to dress it all off. A new vintage look wall mount tub faucet with hand held shower wand was mounted to match the look of the new acrylic free standing claw foot tub that was also installed. After completion she now calls this room her own personal “retreat” and looks forward to her daily hour long soaks in her tub that she easily fits into where the floor temp remains a constant 82°. I love nothing more than taking a space that someone can’t stand and turning it into a place they don’t want to leave. There are many contractors out there who primarily focus on new builds but “also” advertise as performing remodeling as well, but be warned. It takes years of remodeling work to understand the breadth and scope to not only be able to expect some of the hurdles that you may encounter along the way based on the age of the home and the type of construction processes used at that time, but also how to overcome those hurdles and challenges in a cost effective manner. I’m not slamming any contractors, but it would be like asking an employee at an assembly line who puts together automobiles all day long everyday, to perform an engine swap using a completely different engine from another vehicle. That employee is a pro at assembling that vehicle. It’s what they do day in and day out. It’s rightup their alley and within their wheelhouse. However, when you veer outside of that and they’re no longer within that area where they are extremely comfortable and effective, things get very scary and expensive. That’s where you need someone who deal’s specifically with remodeling and knows the ins and the outs of the process. Rubicon Contracting is your number one choice for remodeling work in the Big Horn Basin for kitchens and bathrooms. It’s what we do.

So what do you do when you’re remodeling a bathroom and your plan calls for a heated tile floor and during the demolition phase you discover that there has been years of damage done to the subfloor from a leaking tub, a leaking shower and two leaking water supply lines on toilets in adjacent bathrooms? Couple that with the fact that the subfloor is not conventional tongue and groove plywood but simply the form ply that the original contractor reused after stripping the stem wall footings in order to save money on material costs? So the subfloor would flex too much in between joists and cause the grout lines to crack and possibly subject the tile to premature failure as well. In this case, luckily the floor joists are all in excellent shape for a 60 year old home, so we simply cut the old subfloor out at the plate line and replaced it with new 3/4” T&G OSB using proper subfloor adhesive on all the joists and ring shank nails as well. We now have a great subfloor to work off of and know that the tile in this new bathroom will last for years and we won’t have to worry about any grout lines cracking or tiles popping due to a spongy floor.
