Florence Hartsock Young Scholarship Fund This scholarship was created in honor of Florence H. Young to help high school seniors majoring in n She never was able to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse.

Florence Hartsock Young was a 1944 graduate of Big Creek High School. Although she won a nursing scholarship, her family was unable to afford the $10 monthly room and board fee for nursing school. This scholarship is awarded in her honor to help a high school senior with funds needed for a degree in nursing or a science related field..

What does it feel like to award your mom's scholarship to someone who is a hard worker, a great student and very deserving? AMAZING!! Congratulations to Miss Julia Bailey, the 2022 FHY scholarship recipient, who plans to pursue a degree in radiology/oncology, inspired after her father was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to go through many treatments. What a wonderful ceremony, my mom's spirit was all over that room with me, and my heart overflowed. Godspeed, Julia and best wishes at WVU.

Mrs. Pearson,
I would love to express my gratitude and tremendous thanks for the opportunities you have been a part of opening up for me since my acceptance of your mother’s scholarship. With her scholarship, I was able to pay for a great majority of my nursing books for my two years of nursing school.

It still is an honor to be the first recipient of your scholarship. From starting nursing school, I have completed my first two semesters maintaining a GPA of 3.8 or higher. Now after finishing my second semester, I have earned a job as the Nurse Extern at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital’s (Beckley ARH) Operating Room floor. I was also elected as the president of my graduating nursing class next year.

I pray that I am representing and fulfilling every hope that you have had since giving me your scholarship. I hope that I show your heart and your mother’s love for nursing. I am thrilled to be writing on behalf of my experience with your scholarship foundation and the blessings it has brought me in my life so far.

So excited.... it is almost time! Tomorrow, I will be awarding the scholarship that I created in my mother's memory for the second year..... to a very deserving young high school senior. The student does not know they have been selected yet.... it will be a surprise at the ceremony. The student applications, the selection..... it is all so exciting for me. I will post pics of the ceremony tomorrow! Thanks again to everyone who donated (some donations this year were super special, you know who you are!) and I love and appreciate you all for making this possible! Mom would be so happy knowing that she helped a young student to make their dreams of a career in nursing/medical field come true!

Very exciting event tomorrow.... Manny's Pizza House VI in Port Orange, FL is donating 10% of their proceeds to the Florence Hartsock Young Scholarship Fund!!! Last day of school for teachers....go eat, celebrate, and help someone with their college expenses! 100% of the money goes to a young high school senior majoring in nursing or a medical field. So excited about tomorrow, thanks, everyone!
