This is my first business card, designed for my screen printing business when I was a junior in art school, late 90 or early 91. I named my company Alternate Graphics to have common A.G. initials with Andre the Giant. The term “alternative” as a music genre took the world by storm about a year later, meaning a lot of people mistakenly called my little company “Alternative Graphics” … which irritated me. I knew when I graduated from RISD that I’d no longer have access to the school's print facilities, so I figured I’d build a business printing my own art and doing custom printing for other people. My vision was something akin to Warhol’s factory but with a halfpipe in it, but it didn’t quite work out that way. The Velvet Underground never dropped by Alternate Graphics, and though I did print some stickers for Red Kross and Sonic Youth, I mostly squeaked by printing Karate uniforms and pizzeria tees. AG failed, but regardless, AG helped me learn from my mistakes in business, and I self-published a lot of art for the streets and a bunch of posters no one bought. I worked with my friends and made a bunch of T-shirts too.
