Public Service Announcement:

Starting January 1, 2026, all new gas furnaces in Colorado must meet Ultra-Low NOx (ULN) or ENERGY STAR® certification standards, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions to 14 ng/J or less. State agencies will enforce these rules, with penalties up to $2,000 for violations. Existing furnaces can still be installed until inventory is depleted, ensuring a smooth transition.

For homeowners, the changes will be gradual, with current furnace inventory expected to last three to six months after the new rules. While immediate replacement isn’t necessary, planning ahead is advisable, especially for aging furnaces. This allows exploration of options, understanding new efficiency standards, and taking advantage of current rebates or incentives.

The timeline includes the start of new standards on January 1, 2026, requiring ULN or ENERGY STAR® rated furnaces with at least 95% AFUE. On July 31, 2026, ENERGY STAR® 5.0 will take effect, raising the minimum AFUE to 97% for northern regions. Rebate programs may also be updated, so staying informed is crucial for maximizing value.

These rules aim to reduce NOx emissions, a major source of pollution in Colorado, and align with national trends towards efficient heating systems. The state plans to review standards before 2030, potentially introducing stricter requirements.

Homeowners should explore replacement options soon if their furnace is nearing the end of its life. Early planning offers flexibility and helps secure optimal efficiency, comfort, and incentives. Rebate programs and federal incentives may change, so replacing before 2026 could be beneficial. FLOWORX Mechanical will provide updates on policies, rebates, and inventories to assist in decision-making.
