Happy birthday to this great Veteran!!!

Happy 103rd Birthday, Fred Lunde!
We look forward to seeing Fred at the 53rd Glider Pilots Reunion this October. Way to go, Fred!

On September 18, 1944, Fred piloted a CG-4A glider into Holland. He was among the first Glider Pilots tasked with taking up a defensive position alongside the 82nd Airborne until the 325th GIR could arrive from England. He flew elements of the 82nd Airborne into Holland and landed them on LZ N. During takeoff, the left panel in his glider’s nose blew out, forcing him to complete the entire flight without a left window.

Fred held his foxhole position until September 23, when he was relieved and evacuated by resupply convoy. En- route, his convoy was attacked by the enemy, and a firefight broke out. In the chaos, Fred helped save lives.

Thank you, Fred, for all you have done—and continue to do!

My grandfather was also the first Glider Pilot to do a mission in Burma with British Commandos. Balls of F@cking Steel....

During the month the P-31's started using 1000 lb. bombs and became the first Mustang outfit to use these heavy bombs in combat.

In the meantime, intensive training operations were being carried on at Laleghat and techniques involving pick-up, towing and "blind" landings of Gliders were developed. On Feb. 26, the first glider combat mission was performed.

One glider (John H. Price) carrying 13 special British troops was put down on the East side of the Chindwin near Mincin. The glider was damaged during landing and several passengers suffered minor injuries. The mission was carried out in daylight and without fighter es**rt. The two glider pilots left the British patrol, as it intended to walk into Burma to secure Intelligence information and to make diversionary raids, and walked thru the jungle to safety.
