FROM THE WINY RADIO NEWSROOM: MORE PUBLIC ART COMING TO DOWNTOWN PUTNAM: FROM The Putnam Business Association: Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum, there’s new art coming to Putnam!

August 31, 2026 - 12:00 Noon - 112 Main Street Putnam, CT

The beauty of downtown Putnam is being revitalized with new metal sculptures starting with a feature of Jack and the Beanstalk. Jack and the Beanstalk is the first in a series of three metal sculptures hand crafted by Master Metalsmith Michael Saari.

Saari, a Woodstock resident, is a skilled craftsman with over 40 years of experience. Mr. Saari boasts an impressive resume with works featured in New York City, Mount Vernon Virginia and Marianapolis Preparatory School. He is well known locally for his 20 foot eyeglass sculpture on display near the former American Optical complex in Southbridge.

The sculpture project came to fruition from the efforts of the Putnam Business Association looking to enhance the appearance along the sidewalks of Main Street. In previous years, trees that had dotted the sidewalks were removed due to overgrown roots and four locations were determined to need new features.

The first installation in 2025 was an Ivory Silk lilac tree planted in front of 130 Main Street. The tree was provided by the Town of Putnam Economic Development Department directed by Mary Ann Chinatti.

The next sculpture will honor Putnam’s historic role in the textile industry, and the third sculpture will be a shopper on Main Street. Plans and construction for those installations are for late 2026 and Spring 2027.

The project is supported by generous donations from the Putnam Business Association, the Putnam Area Foundation and the Putnam CT Arts Council. Materials have generously donated by Rawson Manufacturing.

The Main Street Sculpture Committee includes Sheila Frost, Dick Loomis, Mayor Barney Seney, Tom Borner, Mary Ann Chinatti, Beth Johnston, Elaine Turner and Michael Saari.

The Committee wishes to thank all the generous sponsors, the Town of Putnam Highway Department, Mayor Barney Seney, and PBA President Kate Cerrone.

FROM THE WINY RADIO NEWSROOM: MORE GRASS-ROOTS SUPPORT FOR THE WALL THAT HEALS: Earl Rosebrooks saw a need and answered the call. “I saw on the WINY page that the Mayor reached out and said they needed some financial support for the Wall That Heals that is coming to Putnam. I knew the guys to call. I reached out Pat O’Brien, Matt Desaulnier and Jeff Rawson and I knew they would match my donation. I reached out, they responded quickly and the answer is always yes. I’m super proud of all these guys and I’m glad to call them friends.”

Mayor Barney Seney, Co-Chair of The Wall That Heals is grateful for the support. “Today, a group of business people got together and donated $4,000 to the Wall That Heals. That’s what this town is all about. Businesses stepping up and individuals stepping up for our veterans and it’s greatly appreciated by me. This is important to me as a veteran and I can’t thank the community enough for supporting us.”

The Wall That Heals Putnam CT is a traveling display presented by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. The wall started its 2026 tour in Hawaii on January 1st. The wall is making its way across the country and will be in Putnam, CT September 10, 11, 12 and 13.

The wall is 375 feet long, 7.5 feet high at the center and displays 58,218 names of all who died or went missing during the Vietnam War. The wall will be open for viewing 24/7 and will be accompanied by a 51 foot mobile education center.

“I can’t wait to see this come to our town and the people it will bring and the help it will provide for the veterans who went through so much in Vietnam. People need to see this and remember. I think it’s going to be an amazing event”, said Rosebrooks.

Seney added, “We do need more support and if you’d like to donate, please look at our website.”

Donations may be dropped off at the Putnam Municipal Complex, 200 School Street in Putnam.
Please make checks payable to “The Wall That Heals Putnam”

Commemorative t-shirts are also available at the Veterans Affairs Office, second floor at the Putnam Municipal Complex. Shirts are $20 each, $25 for 2X or larger shirts and all proceeds benefit the Wall That Heals. Credit cards are accepted for t-shirts.
