Since our founding in 2020, our NC Discount Propane savings group has delivered over 500,000+ (half a million) gallons of propane to our now 600+ tank-owning clients at rates below $2 per gallon during one of the most financially inflationary periods in American history.

We have also helped 100+ of our clients become propane tank owners by buying hard-to-find new propane tanks and propane appliances at NCdiscountPropane(dot)com, determining ownership of their tanks, or purchasing tanks from other companies so that the customer can shop for the best prices and service.

NC Discount Propane has had the best locked-in rates and customer service in North Carolina for six winters in a row!

During these six years, the average residential propane delivery price was around $3.40 per gallon. Many of our customers came to us from companies charging them $5-$6+ per gallon.

We've saved you over $1.41 per gallon on average when you factor in the fees we negotiated out of our bulk contracts (No hazmat, will call, paper billing, safety check fees), and that means we have saved our customers over $700,000+ during our first six years of operations.

By working and sticking together, we have saved our average NC Discount Propane customer more than $1,000+ each!

Many of our NC Discount propane clients have come to us from other companies that were demanding sky-high prices, offering poor customer service experiences, foreign call centers, billing overcharges, demands for prepayment, and delayed and skipped deliveries.

While all of us understand that propane deliveries are not pizza or Amazon deliveries and will take time and care, some of the largest propane companies, like Amerigas, Superior, and Suburban, have demanded extremely high propane and repair costs while propane supplies and wholesale prices have been lower than they have been in decades!

And each of these three companies has let a lot of their customers down and run out of propane, even customers who agreed to monthly top-offs, tank monitors, and prepaid plans.

Just go to the Better Business Bureau website and look at what propane customers are saying about Amerigas, Superior Propane, and Suburban at BBB(dot)org.

The BBB gives most companies an A rating, but click on the company name, then select COMPLAINTS, and give them a read.

At NC Discount Propane, we believe that propane consumers deserve better prices and service from propane companies, and that we have the right to organize as a group in pursuit of better propane prices and service.

Unfortunately, some propane companies have responded to our rise in the NC propane markets with contempt.

Instead of improving their prices and service to compete with us in the market, or working with our co-op in good faith, they have chosen to badmouth us and/or offer us bulk contracts, pull us in close, get our customer data lists, and then try to pull the rug on NC Discount Propane while offering our customers low rates directly to try to sink our NC Discount Propane ship.

Amerigas and Superior Propane have attempted to eliminate competition in this way.

They don't want propane customers to have any options because their prices are too high, their customer service is abysmal, and they have let far too many of their customers run out of propane.

They have bought out most of the smaller local propane companies in the state and are playing the monopoly game to make sure you land on Boardwalk with hotels.

In the case of Amerigas, we intend to hold them accountable for any problems and damages they have caused our company and any of our NC Discount Propane clients through their unfair business practices, terrible service, and breaches of contract.

We are thankful for each NC Discount Propane client who has stuck with us this far and helped us get to this point.

We are proud of the great service and prices we have provided for our clients since 2020. We've made it further than over 85% of the new small businesses that fold before year six.

We've helped a lot of people save a lot of money during some really challenging economic times, and we aspire to continue serving our NC Discount Propane saving group members into the future.... Lord willing.

NC Discount Propane is leaving Amerigas, you should, too.

We are thankful that our savings group has just completed our sixth winter & propane heating season, and we are pulling into the station on another successful cycle, saving our 600+ NC Discount Propane clients a lot of money and hardship on propane.

We've worked hard as a group of tank owners to gain better prices and service from propane companies, some of which have abused and gouged their customers terribly. While most of you had no issues, Amerigas has dropped the ball on many of our group members in a way we feel is intolerable.

Over 10% of our customers left our group when we negotiated a bulk contract with Amerigas in 2024 because their prior experiences with Amerigas were so horrible that they refused to allow them back on their property. Unfortunately, this is their "I told you so" moment. Amerigas customer feedback ratings are the lowest in the state, and even the Grok AI advises people to steer clear of them.

I have worked overtime to shield our customers from the many problems encountered with Amerigas, but at this time I do not feel we can shield you from what they are trying to do to us all.

Amerigas left many of our customers in a lurch, violating our agreement to deliver within two weeks and making many of you wait a month for deliveries. I believe they prioritized the tank owners calling in during the cold rush who were being charged $4+ a gallon and five fees over our savings group. When we agreed to do business with Amerigas, they told us this would not happen. It was a central requirement on our deal. They broke the deal.

Then they lied to us about the number of remaining gallons under our bulk contract and tried to trick us into signing a new, higher-priced, variable-rate contract just days before the bombs started falling, when in truth we had over 11,000+ gallons left!

Amerigas tried to scam us out of 11k gallons on our contract.

As tank owners, each of you can do business with any propane company you like, and we ask for your patience and continued business and support as we seek new propane companies to supply our 600+ NC Discount Propane customers.

Please keep an eye on your tank levels and call or email in new orders when going below 30%, and we will put you in the queue for deliveries under new contracts with other companies when those options become available.

We need to take some time on that because there is a huge spike in energy prices over the Iran conflict right now, and we need to wait for warmer weeks ahead after the warfare, and prices settle down (we hope).

If you must order from another company, or the backup company we recommend everyone has in place, we suggest you avoid Amerigas, Suburban, and Superior Propane.

These three companies received the most online complaints over the last few months and let the many of their customers run out of propane during the snowstorms and aftermath from the feedback we can see online. NC Discount Propane receives the most complaints from people who were doing business directly with Amerigas, Suburban, and Superior.

Amerigas may make an appeal for you to join them as their direct customer soon and even offer you some very low introductory rates. They may do this to try to knock NC Discount Propane out of business and out of the NC propane markets for good.

We highly recommend you do not award Amerigas with your business moving forward because 1. They just tried to pull the rug on your propane co-op and 2. You will eventually be unhappy with their "service" and prices.

After these very negative experiences, I feel that Amerigas is a company I want to help propane consumers move away from, not towards.

Let's all try to stick together as a unified group of propane tank owners who deserve better prices and service for our collective purchasing power.

Please let us know if you receive any direct offers from Amerigas or if there are any local propane companies you would recommend for our group and group members.

We are very thankful for each of you who helped us get this far. We have overcome big challenges like this before and prevailed.

Try to conserve your propane and stretch your gallons until new supply agreements are in place.

Thank you,

Bill

Severe Problems With Amerigas Supplier

NC Discount Propane has formed to provide our 600+ propane tank-owning customers with better prices and service, while working hard to shield our clients from the many problems with propane suppliers 95% of the time.

Unfortunately, we need to advise all of our customers that behind the scenes, there are very serious problems emanating from our main supplier Amerigas, and while deliveries of our $1.99/gallon propane are continuing slowly for now, it is uncertain if we will be able to sustain into the summer. Some of these problems are so severe that we are becoming uncertain if we can continue to protect our customers from them.

We are withholding all details in the hope that Amerigas will deliver to our customers more promptly and honor every gallon of our bulk fixed-price agreement through the warmer season ahead.

Our propane tank, appliance sales, and suppliers are fine and continuing without issues.

However, we are letting our customers know that we are experiencing mistreatment by Amerigas and that we intend to start discussions with other suppliers in the spring. For now, we will not be accepting any new customers and we ask that our existing customers withhold new propane orders until tanks cross below 30%.

We also encourage each current NC Discount Propane customer to check with smaller, family-owned propane companies like Holding Oil, Payne Oil, & Dickenson to compare their current prices for tank-owning customers and to have a backup company to rely on should Amerigas further violate our agreements or attempt to take down your favorite propane co-op.

Our customers are our top priority. We want to stay in business and continue to save money for and serve NC propane consumers. We are doing our best to mitigate these problems and find constructive solutions going forward.

Please allow us all the patience, time, support, and understanding you can as we try to save NC Discount Propane and protect our customers, while closely monitoring your tank levels and having a backup supply plan in case we have to fire Amerigas as our main supplier for our savings group.

Sincerely,

Bill Gheen

Here is the latest info we have on the current state of emergency in North Carolina's propane supply chain.

A huge spike in calls for propane delivery, combined with back-to-back winter storms and arctic air, has every propane company in the state struggling to keep up and running behind on deliveries.

It's not just us; it is every major company.

An official emergency has been declared, which means our propane truck drivers do not get the recommended ten-hour breaks between their sixteen-hour shifts,16-hour trying to safely resupply as many tanks on their route as possible.

If you see a propane truck driver, be kind to them. These men and women are working 16 hour shifts in and out of their trucks every few minutes in potential frost-bite conditions. If your propane delivery takes longer than we would hope, it is not their fault.

Many deliveries are taking place at 8:30pm or even 2:30am. They tried to fill as many tanks as possible before the snow and ice started falling with each storm, and then the trucks were taken off the roads for safety concerns for several days each time.

All the major companies have called in more workers from other parts of the country that were not as heavily impacted by these winter storms to try to help us catch up on the backlog.

Online feedback and complaints are coming in for every major company. Some deliveries are running two weeks from the time of order. It depends on where you live and when you called in your order during the storm order surge.

From what we can tell, after several mild winters, many propane customers hoped they could ride this one out, but then decided to order all at once when Winter Storm Fern threatened a statewide ice and snowstorm.

The phone lines at propane companies across NC started ringing off the hook Jan 20-23 in the run-up to winter storm Fern, which started Sat. Jan 24.

NC Discount Propane received more calls and emails for delivery that week than any prior week in our company's six-year history serving Carolina propane customers. We've put everyone who called or emailed for a delivery into the queue and are working daily to get everyone taken care of as soon as possible.

Then the propane trucks had to be pulled off the roads for most of the state Sat Jan 24,; through Tuesday, Jan 27, before these large trucks could move safely again.

And the orders kept piling into every propane company as the next Winter Storm was forecast to hit on Sat. Jan 31. The entire propane supply chain was overwhelmed and log-jammed, but the propane is still flowing and most of our customers who ordered are in the green for now or can expect a truck at any time.

I was just emailing back and forth with one of our customers up near Banner Elk where they got a foot of snow and the truck pulled up as we were exchanging information.

And even the large tanker trucks that resupply heavy industries, storage stations, and fill stations are running behind too... not just the residential bobtail trucks. At one point, many of the small cylinder propane fill locations were completely out of propane.

Again, the trucks rolled late into the night, filling every tank they could before much of our state was covered in a foot of snow, taking the trucks off the roads again Jan 31- Tues Feb. 3.

While many of our orders are being filled the same week, we have some customers (about five left of the 17 orders placed that day) who ordered propane on 1/23, who we hope to resupply soon.

Thankfully, we have some warmer weather forecast next Tuesday and Wednesday, and Im watching our delivery queue closely and doing all I can every day, long hours, seven days a week to get our NC Discount Propane customers resupplied.

Please monitor your tanks and the weather closely. Many people found themselves in a lurch because they ordered late and low because the cold temps burned more propane than they are used to.

We ask for your patience and understanding.

A real winter came calling this year, and we are all scrambling to catch up!

Please only order more propane if your tank is under 50% at this time, don't let it go below 40% without ordering. That is the best order window for success at this time 40-50% orders.

If you have placed an order with NC Discount Propne that is not delivered yet, please try to conserve fuel, have safe backup heating plans in place, and let us know right away if your tank drops below 15% while you are awaiting resupply.

Every propane company serving North Carolina customers should make a lot of ground catching up on our outstanding orders this coming week.

If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, please email me at [email protected] or call 919-263-9061, and we will do all we can to help you through this difficult time.

Stay safe & warm,

Bill

Propane deliveries are going to start moving slowly again over the next few days, but you should expect and anticipate delays due to historic winter weather.

The Carolina snow covered all the way into Georgia. This is the morning GOES-19 satellite images.

01/28/2026

Many forecasts predict NC will have more arctic air and another round of snow for much of the state this Saturday in 72 hours, with more winter weather coming the following week.

A huge volume of NC propane consumers ordered propane deliveries in the last week, causing a massive delivery backlog for all North Carolina propane companies during Winter Storm Fern.

Many of our NC Discount Propane customers report "we used more propane than we thought," and some are placing orders with their tanks down near or below 20%, and this creates a very tough situation.

Do your best to not let that happen with your tank. Monitor your tank levels closely. If you don't know your tank level at this moment, GO CHECK IT NOW!

You may order if your tank is below 60% and YOU SHOULD ORDER MORE PROPANE IMMEDIATELY IF YOU ARE AT OR BELOW 40%.

If you place a propane order with a low tank level on top of a winter storm in January or February, we will do our best, but you had better have a backup heating or evacuation plan in place.

NC Discount Propane is working hard and late hours to get our outstanding deliveries made as soon as possible now that the delivery trucks started rolling again yesterday.

Some deliveries could take place at 8pm, some could arrive at 3am. All propane truck drivers in NC are working 14 hours on, 10 hours off, which is the maximum shift allowed by law. Many regions of the state are still thawing out.

Tipping is nice but not required. Some of our NCDP customers have reportedly handed tips to the drivers or placed tips in sandwich bags on their tanks with nice notes from our NC Discount Propane savings group to buy the delivery drivers some lunch or coffee. This is a very nice optional gesture.

Please manage your delivery time expectations and treat the men and women out in the cold trying to safely deliver your propane with maximum understanding, kindness, and respect. Make every effort to clear the way to your tank of any snow, ice, or other obstructions.

If you have an active delivery order with NC Discount Propane for our $1.99/gal deliveries and your tank goes below 15%, please contact us ASAP to let us know.

There is a $300 surcharge emergency delivery option, but that will not work if icy weather grounds the propane trucks for safety reasons.

Stay alert, safe, and monitor your tanks and weather closely, and do not delay sending in a new order if under 40%.

01/24/2026

We do not have a fill station for smaller tanks for grills and 100lbs tanks, and we are now getting calls from people searching for fill stations saying that the 5+ they have tried near Raleigh are all out of propane! If you know of any location in NC that is currently filling smaller propane tanks today Sat Jan 24, before Winter Storm Fern hits, please post the name and location of operational small tank fill stations here so we may share the info.

Emergency Operations: NC Discount Propane will not be accepting any new customers until we are back in the clear on the other side of this winter storm.

We are only accepting delivery requests from our existing customers only and we cannot be certain of how long it will take to resupply new orders for existing customers.

We are now under Emergency Operation conditions.

All existing NC Discount Propane that customers are also notified we are no longer under normal operating conditions and cannot assure new deliveries will take place within seven business days, although many will, and we will work hard to deliver your propane requests as soon as possible.

Please monitor the weather and your propane tank levels closely and place your new orders for delivery when your tanks are between 40 & 60% by emailing [email protected]

Do not let your tanks get anywhere near 20% before ordering for safety reasons. Please place your propane delivery requests by emails to [email protected] you should get an email response within hours, follow up with us if the confirm email does not reach you.

Please include your accurate current tank level with all emailed propane delivery requests.

Propane Standby generators, dual heat systems, & firelog use are likely to spike in these red zones on the weather map forecast provided above, while propane deliveries may slow or be halted until the roads are safe for the trucks and drivers.

If your tank gets low while awaiting resupply from our NC Discount Propane suppliers, try to conserve. If you can get delivery faster through a local company, do what you need to do to fill your tanks and let us know so we can reroute.

We want everyone to do what you need to do to stay safe and warm. Some of your local backup propane companies may be able to reach you faster than our suppliers. In any disaster situation, get
propane any way you can just like during Helene.

At the time of this message, we expect all of our active propane orders placed on or before Jan 16 to be filled before the ice falls Sat Jan 24 except one order that is on schedule for next week.

Some active orders placed Jan 17 through now may be filled before the storm, but many will be scheduled for the first of next week, depending on weather and road conditions.

Please notify [email protected] immediately if your tank reaches 15% or below while awaiting a delivery through us. Please notify us if you get a delivery through another source.

Please make sure you have backup heating and power contingency plans, focus on safety, and make sure you have battery backup, smoke, and carbon monoxide alarms and monitors.

Some of the forecasts believe parts of NC could get half an inch to an inch of ice, which would be considered a catastrophic
storm.

While we hope and pray that does not happen, in the past such storms have knocked out power for weeks and resulted in many injuries and deaths for people who got out on the dangerous roads, were hit by falling trees, were poisoned by carbon monoxide, or set their house on fire trying to stay warm.

Please use the remaining time before this storm to check your propane tank levels, stock up on essentials, have backup safety and heat plans and materials in place, and notify friends and family of your situation.

There are many resources on the Internet and social media providing you with information to help you prepare for and get through a dangerous ice storm. We recommend you take the time you have left to access that information and put it to good use.

NC Discount Propane has some backup power and plans to try to stay in operation as long as possible. We will do all we can to help our customers during this storm.

May God bless and protect you all.

Some of the models & weathermen say much of NC will get a blizzard this weekend! Do you believe it or 'believe it when I see it'? Also, we are getting delivery calls from folks who let their tanks get down to 20%. Please don't let that be you. Call or email us at 40% please.
