One of our Construction Materials Testing (CMT) field technicians recently performed multiple quality control evaluations to help verify roadway materials and subgrade conditions prior to paving and continued construction activities. It’s all part of a day in the life of one of our professionals and a small glimpse into the wide variety of services CMT offers.

Activities performed included the following:

In-place density and moisture testing of ABC stone roadway aggregate using a nuclear density gauge to verify compaction requirements.

Proof roll evaluations of roadway subgrade soils and stone subbase to assess stability, identify unsuitable areas and evaluate load-support capability.

Processing and preparation of bulk soil samples for in-field one-point proctor compaction testing.

NM% Burn Off testing to determine natural soil moisture conditions prior to compaction testing.

These types of evaluations help support quality control throughout the construction process and assist in identifying potential issues before work progresses further.

May is Building Safety Month, an international campaign established by the International Code Council (ICC) to raise awareness about the importance of building safety and its impact on the health and welfare of people worldwide.

This year’s theme, “Built to Last,” highlights the connection between sustainability objectives and building safety outcomes.

Building safety helps protect people and property through modern building codes and standards that address structural integrity, fire protection, electrical and mechanical systems, energy efficiency, accessibility, weather resistance and many other aspects of the built environment. These measures help reduce the risk of injury, loss of life and property damage while supporting safer, more resilient communities.

Building safety also supports indoor air quality, thermal comfort, weatherproofing and environmental considerations such as sustainability and resilience during extreme weather events.

Each week this month features a different theme, including simple actions to improve safety at home, disaster preparedness and resilient building codes, and the importance of accessibility in building construction and design.

This week’s theme is “Voices of the Built Environment,” recognizing the many professionals involved in building safety, including engineers, inspectors, technicians, designers and construction professionals.

At JDS Consulting, our employees work alongside clients, contractors and communities each day to help support building safety and resilient construction practices.

May 4–8 is Construction Safety Week, with this year’s theme: All in Together: Recognize. Respond. Respect.

Research cited by the Construction Safety Research Alliance indicates that during typical pre-task planning discussions, workers identify only about 45% of potential hazards. However, using structured tools to guide those discussions can improve recognition by 30%.

One example of an effective structured tool is the Energy Wheel, which groups common sources of hazards by categorizing them into 10 energy types, such as gravity, motion, electricity and pressure. By reviewing these categories before starting work, teams may be more likely to identify risks that might otherwise be overlooked.

Taking a few minutes to think through how energy is present and controlled on a job site is an important aspect of recognizing hazards, responding to hazards, and respecting every hazard, every person, every life and every role in safety.
