Football season is here! To celebrate the kickoff of the NFL preseason, our team showed off their favorite jerseys and enjoyed a tailgate potluck. Great food, great company, and plenty of team spirit made for a fun day at the office.

Have you seen our crews drilling along Capital Boulevard in Raleigh lately?

We’re supporting North Carolina Department of Transportation's Capital Boulevard North Upgrade between Raleigh and Wake Forest, an effort to improve traffic flow along this busy US 1 corridor.

Our team is collecting subsurface data and providing geotechnical insight to help the project team understand what’s below the surface as design moves forward.

This work helps pave the way for expanding the corridor from four lanes to a six-lane, controlled-access highway with new interchanges, supporting safer, more efficient travel across the region.

At S&ME, our teams work in all kinds of environments, and fall protection is critical.

In recognition of National Safety Month we’re sharing a few key Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS) reminders:

• Choose the right anchorage point: It must support 5,000 pounds per person and be properly designed, installed, and verified. Never tie off to rebar or other temporary materials not engineered for fall protection.
• Training matters: PFAS only works when it’s used correctly. Workers must know how to inspect, wear, connect, and use the system safely.
• Plan before the task: Identify fall hazards early, confirm tie-off points, and reassess if site conditions change.
• When in doubt, stop and ask: If something doesn’t seem right, pause work and contact your supervisor or Safety team.
Before working at elevation, teams should always recognize hazards, evaluate the environment, and confirm the right controls are in place.

Women make up about 15% of the engineering workforce.

Engineering is about solving complex problems, and the best solutions come from talented teams with different perspectives and experiences.

Today, we celebrate the women making an impact across our industry and inspiring what comes next.

We love seeing our team inspire curiosity in the next generation!

Kelli Hajek from our Columbia, SC Cultural Resources group recently partnered with Live Oak Library in Savannah, GA to present “Digging for Information: Discover Archaeology” as part of their summer reading program.

Participants explored real artifacts, learned what archaeologists do in the field, and even conducted their own mini “excavations” using chocolate chip cookies. The experience sparked plenty of excitement, with one child already planning to start digging in their backyard to become a future archaeologist!

Can you guess these zoomed-in PPE photos? In celebration of National Safety Month hosted by National Safety Council, we’re spotlighting the gear that helps our teams stay protected in the field every day.

At S&ME, PPE is a key part of our safety culture as the last line of defense. We have 140+ Job Hazard Analyses that help outline the appropriate personal protective equipment for technicians based on the work being performed.

From hard hats and safety vests to gloves, hearing protection, and safety glasses, every piece of PPE plays an important role in helping reduce risk and support safer job sites.
