🍂 Planning a fall drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway? One of the reasons the Parkway is such a popular destination this time of year is that peak leaf color unfolds over several weeks. The highest elevations typically begin to change first, followed by mid- and lower elevations throughout October, creating a rolling display of fall color across the mountains.

As you're enjoying the views this season, you may also be traveling on a stretch recently improved through the Blue Ridge Parkway Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Project. S&ME has been supporting rehabilitation efforts along 53.5 miles of the Parkway in North Carolina, including pavement improvements, bridge repairs, drainage enhancements, and other infrastructure upgrades designed to help preserve this iconic scenic route.

Whether you're chasing peak color or simply taking the scenic route, we're proud to have contributed to a project that helps keep the Parkway safe and enjoyable for the millions who visit each year.

Before future pavement design takes shape, a clear picture of what lies beneath the roadway is essential. For North Carolina Department of Transportation's Capital Boulevard North Upgrade Improvement Project, S&ME is conducting a pavement investigation that combines geotechnical drilling, sample collection, and laboratory soil classification.

Much of this fieldwork is performed at night, allowing our crews to safely collect data while minimizing impacts for commuters.

The corridor will be transformed from four lanes into a six-lane, controlled-access highway with new interchanges, creating more efficient travel across the region.

Shovel tests are an important part of archaeological fieldwork, determining whether artifacts are present within a project area.

These tests are excavated along transects at intervals that vary by state. And even a negative shovel test provides valuable information as it helps clients move forward with planning and development.
