A gate that needs to be lifted before it closes is telling you something.

Sagging, hinge wear, post movement, or alignment problems can all contribute. Instead of forcing it shut, identify where the movement starts.

A door frame can deteriorate slowly, especially around areas exposed to moisture.

Soft wood, discoloration, cracking, or separation around the frame are good reasons to inspect the area more closely.

Wood rot often starts where moisture sticks around.

Deck boards, railing posts, door frames, and fence components are all areas where exterior wood can begin to deteriorate over time.

Pay attention to spots where water tends to collect or where the wood stays damp. Soft areas, cracking, discoloration, or visible deterioration may be signs that the wood needs attention.

Catching damaged wood early can also help determine whether the affected area can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

One simple deck safety check: pay attention to how it feels under your feet.

If an area feels unusually soft, cracked, loose, or unstable, it could be a sign of deterioration that needs attention.

A damaged deck board may be easy to spot, but it’s also important to check the surrounding boards and supporting structure since the issue may extend beyond what you can see on the surface.

Paint can cover wood rot. It can’t fix it.

When exterior wood starts to soften, crack, or deteriorate, adding a fresh coat of paint may make it look better for a while, but the damage underneath is still there.

The better approach? Fix the damaged wood first. Depending on the condition, that may mean repairing the affected area or replacing the damaged wood, then properly prepping and finishing it to help protect against future moisture damage.

Not sure what you’re dealing with?

📸 Send Triangle Services a few photos. We’ll take a look and help determine whether the damaged area may be repairable or needs replacement.

A damaged deck board does not always mean the entire deck needs to be replaced.

If the damage is limited to a few boards and the supporting structure is still sound, a targeted repair may be practical. The first step is finding out what is actually damaged.

Not sure if your deck needs a repair or replacement? Send us a photo and we can take a look.

🔩 Quick test for Durham homeowners: go grab your deck railing and give it a firm push.

If it moves, you have a problem — and it's more common than you'd think.

We repair and replace deck railings regularly across the Triangle. Here's what we typically find:

1. Post bases rotted flush with the deck surface — looks fine until you push
2. Lag bolts pulling out of a rim joist that's seen too many wet seasons
3. Balusters with too much spacing — NC code requires less than 4 inches
4. Top rails that have separated from the posts and are just sitting there

A railing repair is usually 1-3 hours of work. Full section replacement takes a day. Either way, it's significantly less expensive than a liability claim.
