Squares are stocked and made in many sizes, but sometimes a square punch can be too large to fit in your punch nut.
First check the ID of the punch nut and then the diagonal of the square punch using calipers.
The diagonal needs to be smaller than the ID in order for the punch to correctly pass through.

It’s almost Valentine’s Day…but your punch and die need some space. 💔
Punches and dies should NOT be the same size.
Material type and thickness determines how much space or “clearance” is required. The thinner and softer the material, the less clearance needed. The thicker and harder, the more clearance is needed.

Two different types of punch end shears with similar functionality: House top shear & chisel point with center
House top shears are also known as chisel points and are used to help reduce tonnage and shock.
Chisel point with center is similar, but the center point helps the operator pin point exactly where the hole needs to be punched.

Tip of the week: make sure the material you’re punching is completely under the stripper foot.
This is a classic example of what can happen when your material isn’t entirely under both sides of the stripper foot.
On the upstroke, the material is stuck to the punch. In more serious cases, the punch can break and put you in a dangerous situation!
